[Blythe dolls] Betrayal and backlash in the big-eyed doll community when a convention organizer loses $23K

2020.09.28 10:39 rejamrejam [Blythe dolls] Betrayal and backlash in the big-eyed doll community when a convention organizer loses $23K

WHO IS BLYTHE
Blythe was a fashion doll produced by Kenner (perhaps better known as the Star Wars figures company) for a single year in the seventies. Inspired by Betty Boop, she had a large head and huge eyes, with the gimmick that when you pulled a string on the back of her head, her eyes closed, and when they opened they changed color and expression.
Groovy and glam Blythe did not do well in the toy market, probably because many found her proportions and wide-eyed stare unsettling, as many* still do. However, decades later she was rediscovered, and when TV producer Gina Garan was introduced to creative director Junko Wong and released a book of photography entitled THIS IS BLYTHE featuring the doll, Blythe was catapulted into the spotlight.
Blythe fever swept the world, she appeared in ad campaigns for Target’s Alexander McQueen collab and on boxes of hair dye, and Japanese company Takara, makers of the extremely popular Licca doll, acquired the rights to her image and began producing reproductions in fresh, modernized outfits and hairstyles, ushering in a new era of rabid fans. The craze took root in Japan (always ahead of the curve when it comes to big-eyed cuteness) and rapidly spread to the western world, including a bustling North American fanbase. Blythe had finally found her audience, and a diverse audience it was—she attracted toy collectors, old women, elitist BJD fans, hobby seamstresses, sculptors, goths, pastel kawaii princesses, pop surrealist artists, and more, all united by their love of Blythe’s quirky looks and the burgeoning and extremely popular customization community that kept pushing the limits of what a Blythe could look like.
The community thrived on Flickr and on several message boards, perhaps most notably a forum that we will call Blythe Castle, a fantasy-themed wonderland of buying, selling, trading, generous hints-and-tips sharing, and photo exchanging. The community grew both expansive and tightly-knit, engaging in photo challenges, sharing mail, and having community in-jokes and memes. Eventually it became clear that with such a diverse fanbase uniting so passionately over one hobby, a convention simply must take place—and so Blythecons began.
BLYTHECON
The first couple of American Blythecons—and the Blythecons in other countries—aren’t relevant to this post. Suffice to say that they were a smash hit, the vendors did a brisk business, photos of giant piles of big-eyed dolls arranged on staircases flooded Flickr pages, and everyone had a grand old time planning for next year. Information for those early days—including for the drama we are about to discuss—has largely been lost to the sands of time, so I apologize for any gaps in detail.
Blythecon 2012 went off swimmingly with no major hiccups, and kudos poured in for the event organizers, including two Blythe Castle administrators: we’ll call them Eri and Red. Despite neither of them living anywhere close to Dallas, the city in which the con was held, they organized remotely and the attendees, to judge from the internet chatter at the time, had a great time. Blythecon 2012 showed the community shaping up into a real force: there were demonstrations, contests, and immediate plans for Blythecon 2013, to be held in New York City in October.
Prebooked tickets sold briskly in 2012 and the community was from an early date abuzz with excitement about the upcoming event, which promised to be even better than the Dallas show. Plans were made early, despite an unusual lack of communication coming down from above about concrete details.
People had faith in Red and Eri after the enormous success of the previous year, and held tight despite the occasional uneasiness as the con date crept closer. Which made it all the more shocking when eventually, just a month before the convention was scheduled to occur, Eri made a public post on a journal devoted to chronicling scammers and shady business dealings in the dolly community, and the information rapidly spread across the Castle.
THE EXPOSURE
The explosive post was brief, but ugly: Red had informed Eri that the Blythecon money, which had been kept in Red’s personal account, had been garnished. A grim line in the post summed up the situation in brief: “$23428.18 is gone. I have received $3893.36 back and will need $8906.64 by next Friday, to make BlytheCon happen.”
Red was apparently selling dolls on the Blythe Castle forums to attempt to recoup the money. In the comments to the post, Eri laid out the entire email history between herself and Red—at least dating from the time that Red finally began answering emails, as she had apparently been ignoring them.
In the lengthy discussions that followed—dating back to mid-August for a convention, remember, slated to happen in October—Red claimed that the money had been garnished a month before, and that she had attempted suicide in the aftermath. She repeatedly brought up her suicide attempt, her mental health, and her limited internet access (unexplained), until Eri was compelled to state, firmly, that feelings of guilt were not relevant to the conversation: the money needed to be accounted for, and quickly, or Eri would have to call off the event.
Eri in the emails also mentions the grim reality of her own situation: while Red’s name is on the financials, her own name is on the event, and when this all comes crumbling down she will not only face public backlash in a community where many people have her address and contact information, she can be—according to her lawyer—held legally an accomplice. She demands Red come clean publicly, even if it has to be in a vague way, and Red demurs, saying that her own legal advice had been to the contrary, apparently not realizing why Eri is asking this of her.
In the increasingly cagey series of emails Red makes various promises to supply money from this or that location on some future date, and offers to send Eri a pile of dolls and “sundries” (clothes and accessories for dolls) to sell to raise funds, then continues to be cagey about the tracking numbers for said packages. She says that cancelling the event would not “be fair” for attendees, in a moment that one can only describe as a little tone-deaf. Eri, having run out of ultimatums and having involved the police, went public.
Understandably, all hell broke loose. I myself discovered this when returning from a long hiatus and finding Red’s username on the forum with BANNED written under it, several deleted threads, and a notably sluggish and uninvolved community that had been bouncing along speedily months before, in a moment akin to touching one’s fingertips to the ground and murmuring “some great violence occurred here.” But for the moment, there was still a loud contingent of people who insisted: the show must go on. The convention must continue. The money must be gotten, the ticketholders must have something to show for their funds, and the convention, despite everything, must be held.
The promised box of dolls and sundries arrived to Eri two days after the situation went public, and Eri began selling off the dolls to raise money to secure the venue. In the meantime Red continued finalizing sales of dolls she had listed on the Castle forums, and donations poured in from some generous anonymous benefactors, listed by initial in an update post by Eri to assure people that yes—the funds were coming together, and the convention would not, despite everything, be canceled. Eri also mentioned that one member of the community had gotten in touch with an offer to act as financial adviser which she—wisely—had accepted. Equally wisely, she had insisted to Red that money raised from Red’s doll sales be sent to an independent Paypal account and not Eri’s own personal one.
In the meantime, Eri came under scrutiny, and the community—quite understandably—had questions. Why wasn’t the venue secured earlier, when tickets went on sale the year before? Why did Eri cover for Red for weeks of back-and-forth emailing instead of freely informing the public what was at stake? Shouldn’t Eri step down as admin of the Castle forums and let someone else take the reins? And why on EARTH was the money being held in Red's personal bank account? The debate raged on, but still, there was a more pressing issue—the convention itself.
THE CONVENTION
Miraculously, the story has a better ending than such hobby drama stories generally do. Doubtless many started this story and formed an impression of a canceled con or a disaster, but—shockingly—neither happened.
The community rallied. The funds were acquired. Legal action was pursued in earnest against Red by both Eri and members of the community, and the convention, against all odds, went on. In October, in New York City, hundreds of Blythe fans gathered at the hotel and there were vendors, demonstrations, and—of course—lots and lots of dolly photos. Videos taken from the convention floor look cheery, post-Facebook chatter is pleasantly joyful, and all in all few seem to even remember that the con funds were absconded with by a respected member of the community.
THE FALLOUT
Despite the success of Blythecon 2013, the stain was there, and the final post on the 2013 convention’s Facebook page—on the heels of several happy discussions about vendor tables—is a detailed list of instructions for pursuing legal action against Red. The Castle forums never quite recovered from the shock of Red’s betrayal, and Eri, while maintaining her post as admin, never had quite the public trust that she had had before. The forums continued to be active, but the pall cast by the event lingered and probably—although this is speculation—helped contribute to their winding down. The community drifted to Facebook, torn asunder still more by the flagging of Flickr—hitherto a primary gathering place for fans—and to Instagram, and to this day remains fragmented. Blythe Castle still stands, but between the 2013 fallout and classic forums falling out of fashion, it is a very quiet—and often silent—place.
In a last little stab of drama, some of the buyers of Red’s emergency sale Blythes posted that they had never gotten their dolls. These public conversations peter out. The final post remaining on the original discussion post is an ominous reply to someone asking if restitution was ever made. Posted in December by one of Red’s buyers, two months after the convention, it reads in its entirety: “Nope.”
Blythecons in North America, however, continued. As far as I am aware, there has been a successful Blythecon every year until Blythecon Calgary 2020, when COVID-19 did what Red couldn’t and robbed Blythe fans of their annual place to hang out with their big-eyed plastic pals, bonding over their shared, somewhat eccentric hobby. It continued online, was apparently—for an online convention—pretty successful, and brought a spark of unity to an increasingly-fragmented community.
It’s unlikely that anything will ever replace the close-knit, unified North American Blythe community that existed before 2013. It’s equally unlikely that 2013 was entirely to blame for the fragmentation of the fanbase when so much of it can be chalked up to evolving technology and changing social media landscapes, as well as quality issues with Takara Blythes and the flood of cheap and divisive counterfeits (a subject for another post), but it did undoubtedly have some effect on the Blythe Castle part of it. But although the hobby has grown increasingly far-flung, it remains filled with passionate fans, and many of the names that turned up in discussions about Red’s betrayal, Eri’s cover-up, and last-minute hotel bookings back in 2013 still show up in conversations about Blythe today—and conventions, along with their funds, are handled with a lot more scrutiny.
*I love Blythe but the first time I bought one I turned her face to the wall while I slept. It takes some getting used to.

2020.09.26 18:48 cattlebull VanMoof's live Q&A on Instagram

Yesterday VanMoof had a Live Q&Aon Instagram with questions. with the CEO Taco Carlier
I've written down (in my own words) the questions and answers for those who don't have time to listen to the Q&A to read them in their own time. I think there is some valuble information for all those who get delay emails and are are getting frustrated.
PSA: I'm sure there are a ton of typo's in there. If I paraphrased something incorrectly, please let me know. Also i'm not a native English speaker so bare with me.
Enjoy

Q: How do you plan up to catch up with the delays
A: Two types of delays. Delivery: Supply and demand - demand has been beyond any reason. We couldnt keep up with demand. Producing 4x bikes compared to last year. Still not enough. Bikes will be in stock january/february. Other type of delay: further delays. 3-4 weeks, frustrating for customer and for us due to extra load on customer support. unexpected quality issues - Wobbling wheels, therefor an extra quality check was needed which added another 3-4 days initially. We rented extra space, hired more people and train them for this extra Quality assurance check. We hate it to send those emails but we can't send out the bikes without these quality checks.
- We hope we send the last delay emails this week. the QC teams are well setup. shipping out large quantities in the Europe and US. No guarentees due to pandamic. Fingers crossed.

Q: How have you adapted your supply chain?
A: Company doubling revenue every year. Doubled production in Spring. Demand peeked further due to demand S3/X3 (possible aided by the pandamic). Doubled in Summer again (the 4x from question before). We believe this is enough but are ready to 'double' again in the Fall or next year if needed.

Q: Why keep on sending delays and not one delivery date.
A:We are just as frustated about the delay email as you are. Don't want to blame the pandamic too much but it made it much harder to scale our team.

Q: How come the X3 delivery are harder than the S3
A: The X3 is a little bit more complicated to assemble and produce. Bike is bit smaller so less space for components. More unexpected issues and challenges compared to S3. Team is working to ramp up X3 production.

Q: How are you going to assure customer service
A: Mostly customer support issues in Europe. In the US and Japan it's fine (<24hours). What happened. I believe the amount of support calls was times 8 or even times 10. Sometimes it seems like that the pandamic accelerated the use of e bikes. Also excisting customers wanted to have their bike in top shape which added a lot of stress on our support team. Trying to get rid of the backlog in 2-3 weeks with the current amount of colleagues (70) (data based guess). if we can't get rid of the backlog we will grow the team even larger. The capital raises will be invested in fixing customer support. Not just how to fix it but bring it to the next level. In my perfect world people can report it in the app and we collect the data from the bike and the rider and all this data we use to give exact the right advice to the customer. We will start this project this year and you can expect results in 12 months.

Q: It's a great bike but struggling with quality issues, how come?
A: To get the next 1 billion people on bikes we have to redesign the supply chain, how they are made. Redeisging every component in-house where hardware and software are seemly intergrated in one rider experience, thats the goal. That means there is a lot innovation, new components. Every time , S1, S2, we had issues. Everytime you solve them and trying to solve the issues from 1000 to 100 to 10 to maybe 1 with each generation. The expectation was that with all VanMoof's 1% would have an issue. That would have been acceptable. We ended up close to 10%. That also had caused a lot of stress on CS. The bikes that are shipped out now have a much lower %. Not at 1% yet but we are getting there. The S3/X3 are by far the best bikes on the market for a competitive price (comparing to bikes with x4 the price). We are aiming for a 100% customer satifacation, which we are working on and will solve. In the end we will solve all issues. Both with software updates, tips&tricks or replacing the bike. The wheel allignment is an issue we are a bit ashamed of we did not have with the S1/S3. The big issues are on the wheels.

Q: Is it difficult to start a repair network with Bike mechanic
A: Ofcourse, it's a big project. It's global. We want to roll it out in the US, Europe and Japan.
Flexibility is key and if a pandamic is happening again we want to be able to scale. We don't need to train them in 6months. example; Reparing a flat tire, anyone can do that, doesn't make sense to have a bike doctor do that. You want to roll out a software platform. Requests go out to the right bike doctor which is trained and hired. It's going to be a combiination of bike doctors from VanMoof and freelance bike doctors. Sometimes we can combine their knowledge for training. Freelancers will be used for the scalability.

Q: How are you planning on fixing the problems on transportation of the bicycles.
A: In the past we had this beautiful hack by printing a television on the box. The couriours taught there was a television inside. Due to the size it could be a very expensive television. Shipping damages went down from 25 to 2%. With the S3 we completely redesigned the packing with a goal to have no plastic at all. We had too many damages to but the plastic back in. We thought it would be good enough without the television printed on it. It seems we are not there yet and have more shipping damages with the S2. Trying to figuring out if it is because of the television or something else. One could cause the other. Our R&D team is trying to figure out the issue and work on that.

Q: When will it be possible to buy the SX3 int the brand stores
A: though question, We lowered the price a lot compared to the SX2 600-1000 euros. Posssible due to suply chain, selling direct to customers and no brand stores all of the world. So if people come to the store, this means we would fully assemble the bikes and handle the foottrafic. This would eventually cost extra. Compared to Ikea, more affordable but take it home/delivered in a box. At the moment, fully transparent, I don't know yet. Maybe a Bike doctor can play a role in this with a surcharge attached. if we want to keep selling our bike for 2000 euro this is currently the most affordable way.

Q: What happeneds if 3G ends.
A: We use Vodafone 2G and 3G. our bike hunters use multiple systems for finding the bikes. We are in close contact with vodafone scaling down the 3G. We are prepared for it and have alternative systems. Not all systems go down soon. I don't want educate bike thieves too much.

Q: What do you think, is the biggest challenge for VanMoof for expanding.
A: I want to grow this company. I want to keep growing like this, doubling our revenue. Not just for the sake of growing or turning the company in a IPO. I think the bike industry is very inefficient. Every country have their own brand and different models. If we are able to offer a few models all over the globe and scale the company, hire more product and software engineers and lowering the cost price. High tech, high quality, affordable prices. In the last 11 years we reinvented the industry and this only works if it gets big.
That was the why, now the what; (what challenges); ramp up customer support, but not too fast. Don't want to hire too many people and lose money. Balancing: investments, production, customer support and marketing in order to make the company big will be the biggest chalenges int he next 5 years.

We want to reinvent the industry on a global scale. For that we need the best people to join VanMoof.

I can assure every customer, with a team of 300 people; we are a group of young, educated, dedicated people to create the best bike (experience) together.

The more commonly-asked of those deal primarily in resins from studios which do not have a license from the Japanese IP holders to produce merchandise. Therefore links to those sites are not permitted here. Another sign is if MyFigureCollection doesn't list the either the statue, its manufacturer, or the shop it's being sold on.

Buying & Shipping

1. What’s the best place to buy my anime figures from?
That’s going to depend a lot on what works for you, but most people around here buy them from Amiami, Big in Japan, Hobby Search, HobbyLink Japan, or Tokyo Otaku Mode. If none of those work for you for whatever reason, there’s a list of reputable retailers in the sidebar that you can check out at any time. Be extra careful when ordering figures from websites like Amazon or ebay, as there are a lot of bootlegs on those sites. Don’t be afraid to ask in our Bootleg Megathread if you’re unsure.
2. What differences are there between the shipping options I get from most Japanese shops?
Below is a rundown of the main shipping choices you’ll get at most retailers. Keep in mind that if an order is large enough you will be forced to use one of the more expensive options, as SAL shipments have lower size and weight restrictions.
  • Unregistered SAL: Sometimes referred to as uSAL, is usually the cheapest method. It does not come with any tracking or insurance. Usually takes up 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Registered SAL: Sometimes referred to as rSAL, is insured for the declared value up to 6,000 yen. It comes with a tracking number and usually takes 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • EMS: This method of shipping is much faster than either SAL options, usually arriving within a week of shipment. EMS shipments are insured for the declared value up to 2,000,000 yen.
  • Airmail
  • E-packet
  • Surface: Shops don't offer this very often. It's an actual cargo ship and slow as a result.
  • DHL: Becoming more available as an alternative to EMS on AmiAmi and other sites. Can be less expensive than EMS and of comparable speed, but may be more reliant on the specific geographical area being shipped to. Offers their own tracking.
3. I placed two+ orders for figures at different times. Will my items be shipped together, or will I have to pay shipping twice?
Most shops will ask you to pay shipping on a per-order basis, but here are some that will allow combined shipping:
  • Amiami: You can combine orders here, as long as the orders ship in the same month. It doesn’t matter if the item is new or preowned. Any preorders that are set for that month can also be combined with other orders for that month. However, be aware that if the preorder gets delayed, Amiami will remove that item from that month’s shipment and place it on a new order. To combine orders on Amiami, use the “Combine Orders” feature under “My Account”.
  • Hobby Search: Hobby Search will let you combine orders that release in the same month, but you cannot combine in stock items with preorders. If you want to combine multiple preorders, or multiple in stock items, you can do so using the “Order Recombination” feature on your account page.
  • HobbyLink Japan: At HLJ, you have the option to send paid orders to their “Private Warehouse”, where you can store them for up to 2 months. When you’re ready to ship the items, you simply select which items to ship and HLJ will combine them into one shipment for you. To use this, just select the “Private Warehouse” option as shipping when you order.
  • GSC Web Shop: Here you’ll pay a flat 2,000 yen fee per order. It doesn’t matter how many items you put in your order, or how many different months the items release in. They will charge you 2,000 yen and ship all items as they release. The exception to this rule is their Wonder Festival exclusive items. Those can only be placed in the same order as other Wonder Festival items.
If you’re unsure about whether or not a shop we haven’t listed will combine your orders, please refer to their individual FAQ’s.
4. When will I get charged for my preorder?
Most Japanese shops charge you once the item is in stock and ready for shipment. When that happens, they will send you an email asking for payment. Some shops (mostly overseas ones), will allow you to pay for the item up front though, if you’d like. A few with that option are:
  • Big in Japan (Japanese store)
  • Tokyo Otaku Mode
  • Anime Island
  • Crunchyroll
Keep in mind that overseas stores will likely get the figure a few months after Japanese ones, so pay attention to the release date stated on the website you are buying from so as to avoid that confusion.
5. Should I expect to pay customs fees when importing figures?
That depends on where you live. Here’s a quick rundown:
  • Australia: 10% GST is now assessed up front.
  • Canada: Minimum declared value for charges is around CAD$20 for regular shipments, and CAD$60 for gifts (gifting something only seems to lower the declared value by about CAD$40, not deplete it completely). When using Amiami, try their Small Air Packet option. It comes with tracking, gets there in about the same time as EMS, and is better at avoiding customs.
  • Europe: Using EMS raises your chance of getting charged for customs. SAL can still avoid customs in some countries, but generally gets checked in the UK now if the items are above the threshold. Amiami offers a shipping service called “Small Air Packet” that is really good for avoiding customs when you are only shipping one or two figures. Small Air Packet usually takes about the same amount of time as EMS, and still comes with tracking. The minimum declared value for customs charges in the Europe is pretty low- around £15 (£36 for gifts) / €20.
  • Mexico: Minimum declared value for customs fees is USD$300 for shipments by post, and USD$50 for shipments by courier.
  • United States: A shipment has to have a declared value of USD$2,000 before customs starts hitting you with fees, so you most likely won’t have to worry about them at all.
6. The figure I want is an exclusive, how do I go about ordering one outside of Japan?
You have three options for this:
A. Big in Japan is known to stock exclusive figures and ship to other countries. Usually the price is higher because they build in their proxy fees, but it’s easier than worrying about using a forwarder or proxy service. If you live in the US, Crunchyroll, Right Stuf, and Tokyo Otaku Mode also get exclusives sometimes, but out of the states the shipping can get expensive.
B. Forwarding Services: A forwarder is someone who you ship an exclusive item to so that they can forward the package on to you, usually for a flat fee + shipping. When using a forwarder you still make the purchase yourself, and enter their address into the shipping field. When the box arrives at the forwarder they will then stick your address onto the package and send it on its way.
Some popular forwarders are:
Be sure to read each sites instructions on forwarding carefully!
C. Proxy Services: With a proxy, you tell them what the item you’re looking for is and they will purchase it in your stead. This is handy for when a company doesn’t accept foreign credit cards, or you’re having trouble navigating a Japanese website.
Some popular proxies are:
Again, be sure you thoroughly read through each sites proxy instructions.
7. I see a bunch of really cheap figures that ship from China on ebay. Are those okay to buy?
Generally, no. They’re most likely bootlegs. If you want a second opinion on that, feel free to ask in the Bootleg Megathread that’s always stickied at the top of the sub.
8. What’s a bootleg, and how can I avoid buying them?
A bootleg is a counterfeit figure often made using rejected molds of the official product. They are usually priced significantly lower than the genuine article, and in order to make their profit, bootleggers use lower quality materials and have less attention to detail- resulting in a substandard figure.
The Bootleg Megathread that I mentioned in question 7 is a great tool to avoid buying any bootlegs. It has a few tips and tricks to avoiding them to begin with, and a few more on how to spot them if you’re worried you might already own one.
9. Does anyone know when figure X is going to be released? How do I know if it was delayed?
My Figure Collection (sometimes referred to as MFC) does an excellent job of staying on top of information like release dates and delays. If you’re curious about an upcoming figures release date, check there first. This information can be found directly under the “Releases” section on a figure’s entry. If you only see a month and a year in that section, it means the release date has not yet been announced by the manufacturer, and there is still a chance the figure could be delayed.
If you make an account on MFC you can also subscribe to comments, changes, and pictures via a checkbox on the right hand side of a figure’s listing. Subscribing to any of these things will allow MFC to send you an email anytime the subscription in question updates. Subscribing to “changes” is a great way to keep up with release dates and delays, among other things.
10. The figure I want is long sold out at normal retailers! What’s the best place to pick it up in the aftermarket?
A list of reputable retailers can be found under the “Shops” section of the /AnimeFigures sidebar. They all sell legitimate products, and many of them also sell figures second hand. However, the most frequently suggested second hand sites are Mandarake and Amiami- who has a preowned section that they update every night save Sundays and Japanese holidays around 1PM JST and again around 6PM JST.
AmiAmi grades their pre-owned items on a letter scale. The general consensus from buyers is that their ratings are conservative, so unless the item and/or packaging is specifically indicated as having significant flaws, pre-owned items from them are usually in at least as good a condition as their rating suggests.
Note: When you search Mandarake, you’ll get the best results by using the Japanese characters for whatever you are searching. If you don’t know them, you can find them on MFC by clicking on any of the “details” in that figure’s listing.
11. Amiami has a figure I’m interested in labeled as “For sale in Japan only”. Does this mean I can’t order it without a proxy or forwarder?
No, you can still order it. Amiami’s English site has that warning on many items, and it’s mostly meant to inform you that this product was made for a Japanese market, and as such, will have Japanese speaking/writing in it- so don’t expect any instructions to be in English. If Amiami doesn’t want foreigners buying a certain product, they won’t even list it on their English site.

Displaying Your Figures

12. What display cases do you recommend?
If you live near an Ikea try out one of these:
*If you decided on a Detolf, you might find that there is a lot of wasted space. Here are a few tutorials on raising the shelves or and adding extra ones in.
If you don’t live near an Ikea, Amazon has a few display options, though they are more expensive. Also keep an eye on your local Craigslist (or your country’s equivalent) and stores near you that are closing up.
13. What lighting do you guys recommend?
Ikea’s Dioder LED strips are often suggested. They come in white or muti-colored.
Most hardware stores carry something similar though, if you don’t live by an Ikea. Just make sure that the lights don’t get too hot!
14. What are those clear plastic boxes that I see under everyone’s figures in their collection posts, and where can I get them?
Those are called risers. Most of us use standard acrylic risers like these. Some other, easy to find things that have been suggested are:
Check your local hobby store for the first 2 options, or your local hardware store if you want to make your own.
Another common suggestion is to visit The Container Store if you have one near you. They have a lot of things to choose from that can suit a variety of needs. Be sure to check out their standard acrylic risers, their Amac boxes, and the various display cases they sell (baseball cases, mini car cases. hockey puck cases, etc).
15. Should I keep my figures sealed?
That is, of course, up to you really, but here are a few things to keep in mind when debating this question:
  • Keeping it sealed can actually damage your figure. PVC figures usually have something called plasticizer in them, and that plasticizer needs to be able to breath. If a PVC figure isn’t exposed to oxygen, after a period of time the plasticizer starts to break down and form a sticky substance on the surface of the figure. Simply opening your figures and taking them out of the box prevents this from happening. If you happen to find plasticizer goo on one of your figures, Kahotan has a handy guide for dealing with it.
  • Unlike some other figure markets, keeping an anime figure sealed won’t raise its value by a whole lot. In fact, because of the plasticizer problem mentioned above, your figure could actually be in better condition if you open it versus keeping it sealed.

Finding the Right Figure(s) for You

16. There are so many figure companies! Who makes good figures?!
Obviously this is a very subjective question, but as a general starting point, here are a few well renowned figure companies:
  • Alter
  • Max Factory
  • Good Smile Company
  • Kotobukiya (usually hit or miss for people. Use your best judgement based off of the prototype)
  • Aquamarine
  • Flare
  • Stronger
17. I really love “series X / character X”- how can I check if any figures were ever made for it?
My Figure Collection can be your best friend here. Simply do a search on the name of the series or character using the search bar located at the top right of the screen, and all associated figures pop up!
Alternatively, if you’re looking at a figure’s MFC entry, most of the text under the “Details” section can be clicked on and used to run a search.
18. How can I commission a custom figure?
None of the major figure companies (Alter, Kotobukiya, Good Smile Company, etc.) will take a commission for a single figure. This thread has a few websites in it that you can check out, or you can look into garage kits. Some kit painters would be willing to resculpt, frankenstein together, or otherwise modify kits for the right price.
If you're looking for help completing a garage kit, /brushforhire may be useful.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.
Most companies have one or more Twitter accounts. Some examples: Good Smile Company sales, Good Smile's USA branch, Max Factory, AmiAmi Hobby News.
20. Everyone’s excited about something called Wonfes….. what the heck is that?!
WonFes (short for Wonder Festival) is a biannual figure expo where many figure producers (both large and small) show off new sculpts and updates to figures already under way. Most companies save their most exciting announcements for WonFes, so we all look forward to the expo whenever it rolls around! Winter Wonder Festival is usually held in February, while Summer Wonder Festival is usually in July. The event has also spread to Shanghai, in the late spring.
21. One or two (or 15) figures were announced at WonFes that I’m really excited about! How can I keep track of their progress once the event is over?
MFC is always really quick about getting new WonFes announcements (or any others throughout the year, for that matter) listed in their database, so we suggest using that. To find a figure from the event you can search any number of things, including the name of the character or the name of the show. You can also use the tag search to search “WonderFestival 20xx_[season]” to see all items announced at that event.

A thread for new collectors to ask basic questions of the community.
Frequently Asked Questions below!
A longer version of the subreddit rules is here.
For questions specifically concerning bootlegs or vendor legitimacy, please ask in the Bootleg Megathread.
NSFW & Spoiler Guidelines
  • For Self Posts: include a bolded NSFW note next to links in that post.
  • For Links to sites/images: If the figure is NSFW, or the website has any NSFW content (including ads) be sure to tag your post NSFW and use the appropriate link flair.
Bootlegs
Any collection posts containing bootlegs, comments advocating buying bootlegs, or links to sites selling bootlegs, recasts, or unlicensed merchandise will be removed.
People often ask about the legitimacy and/or safety of a number of websites which sell large resin statues.
MyFigureCollection
My Figure Collection is like MyAnimeList... but for figures! Their database includes thousands of items which been produced during the last couple of decades, along with reviews of shops and other helpful articles. One can also list their own collection and post gallery photos.

2020.09.23 09:27 Giora_Thorntree Oki Islands

Overview
The Oki Islands are a small archipelago in the Sea of Japan, roughly 50km off the north coast of Shimane prefecture. On a clear day, they are clearly visible from the Japanese mainland. However, the distance is enough that the islands feel distinctively remote, and have their own pace of life.
The islands are the remnants of two large volcanoes which sit on the sea bed. One of the volcanoes has produced only one large main island - Dogo, also known as "Okinoshima" - which is where the bulk of the Oki's population live: there are about 20,000 people on the island. The other volcano has produced scores of islands, though only 3 are inhabited: Chibu, Ama, and Nishinoshima. These islands cluster around each other, with the underwater caldera of the volcano forming a little "inland sea", in an area known collectively as "Dozen". Only about 5000 people live on the 3 Dozen islands in total.
History
The Oki Islands have been inhabited as long as the rest of Japan, and were incorporated into the earliest Japanese states, much like neighboring regions of Honshu. The islands comprise their own Japanese province: Oki. Always a small and lightly populated province, it was kept independent because of transportation issues, and the difficulties of trying to administer it from the mainland. The only real famous episodes of history that occurred on the Oki Islands were during the Kamakura Era, when two emperors were sent into exile on the islands after rising up against the Kamakura government. In the early 13th century, the first Kamakura era emperor Go-Toba's rebellion was ultimately unsuccessful, and he spent 19 years on Ama before dying a lonely death. A hundred years later, Go-Daigo was only in the Oki's for a year, before escaping, Napoleon-style, back to the mainland, where he triumphantly re-enterred Kyoto, briefly became ruler of all Japan, and then had to flee again and establish an alternative court in Yoshino. The Oki's make the most of their connections to these emperors.
In modern times, the islands are the base of the Liancourt Rocks dispute, with Japan claiming that the Korean controlled uninhabitable rocks are part of the Oki Islands. The Oki's are peppered with propaganda declaring that "Takeshima" (as the Liancourt Rocks are known in Japanese) are an inalienable part of Japan.
To and from the Islands
There's an airport on Dogo, with limited flights. Most visitors come and leave by boat. Three large vehicle ferries, and one smaller high-speed passenger ferry run between the islands and the mainland, as well as between Dogo and the Dozen islands. There are at least 2 boats a day on most routes. Two ports on the mainland are served: Sakaiminato, in Tottori Prefecture, and the port of Shichirui, in Matsue, Shimane, which is in a remote location, but has good road access. In addition, there are many ferry services each day running the short hops between the three Dozen islands.
The ferry services are among the highlights of visiting the Oki's. The islands look spectacular from the sea, and the ferries round remote capes and off-shore islands that are difficult to get to by other means. For the best views, use the slower, cheaper car ferries rather than the high-speed boat.
Getting around the islands
RENTING A CAR - Cars can be rented on the islands, and are a particularly good bet on Dogo, which is large. The car companies tend to run policies which suit island travel reality, offering good rates on 24-hour rentals, for example, which will give you a car between two ferry sailings. Being small, the number of cars on offer is limited, and rental cars sell out during busy vacation periods.
CYCLING - You can rent bicycles on the island, though the Oki's are very hilly. Dogo is roughly 100km around, and with lots of big hills along the way, it's not suited for a day cycle unless you're practicing for the Tour de France.
BUS - Bus services on the islands tend to be infrequent, but many places of interest are served. The tourist offices tend to discourage use of buses - particularly on Dogo - but if strategically combined with some hiking, the buses can be very handy for getting around the islands.
HIKING - The islands are perfect for hiking! They're beautiful, roads are generally wide and little trafficked, and there's very good pedestrian infrastructure, with lots of pavements. Combined with the odd bus ride, hiking is a great way to explore the Oki's.
HITCHHIKING - Should be comparatively easy. Even without flagging anything down, we had several vehicles stop and ask if we wanted rides, and had multiple offers from people to drive us out their way to our destinations. In out of the way places, however, there are very few cars!
Accommodation
Hotels and minshuku can be found all over the islands. There are also lots of campsites on the islands, many with spectacular settings. Camping is recommended.
General infrastructure
There are no convenience stores on the islands. The only real supermarkets are in the main town on Dogo. Away from there, larger villages have some very basic grocery shops, but don't expect much! The main port areas on Ama and Nishinoshima have some restaurants. In general, you need to plan your food carefully on the Oki's, particularly if you don't have a car.
Tourist information offices were found at all the ports we visited. We found them very helpful, with useful maps and pamphlets, and an eagerness to answer questions. On the smaller islands, you can also use them as left luggage. Visitors to the Oki's should bring money with them, but if desperate, you can probably find useable ATM's at island post offices.
General Sightseeing
The scenic beauty of the islands is undoubtedly the highlight. The coastal scenery in particular, with dramatic volcanic cliffs, and all kinds of rocky islets is worth the visit alone. On top of that, there are some nice historic and cultural sights, as well as a chance to mingle with the friendly locals, who still live in rather cut off, insular communities.
One word of warning: there are too many museums on the Oki's. Many of the museums and other ticketed attractions are only somewhat interesting, without much on display. The islands would benefit from an amalgamation of museums!
Dogo
The largest island in the Oki's. The main town lies in the south, sprawling for several kilometers around rice-filled valleys, rocky hills, and the coastline of a beautiful natural harbour. This is where the main port is. The port area is quite pretty, and has the biggest concentration of restaurants in the Oki's. The main shopping area is a few kilometers inland, and includes the islands' only real supermarkets.
Elsewhere, the island is a mess of coastal fishing village, rocky highlands, and remote, forested hills. The sights are spread out, and beautiful scenery is just about everywhere, particularly along the coast.
COASTAL SCENERY
The coast is gorgeous pretty much everywhere. Given the dramatic nature of the volcanic coastline, there are few places with coastal roads. Accessing coastal scenic spots often involves long jaunts in and out of the interior. Here are some selections of nice spots, going clockwise around the island from the main port. No doubt there is plenty of dramatic scenery elsewhere as well.
Saigo Bay - The Bay shares its name with the island's main port. This is the best natural harbour on Dogo. There are some very pretty roads running alongside the bay.
Airport cliffs - Just below the airport are some beautiful, dramatic cliffs. They're most easily seen from the ferries.
Candlestick Rock - One of the island's most famous spots, this is a pointy rock which sticks out of the sea a little like a candle. It's surrounded by more dramatic coastal scenery. One way to see it is to take a sightseeing boat, though there are also some spots on the island from where you can see it and more dramatic scenery, including the pretty village of Kumi.
Shirashima - The island's most beautiful spot! Stunning volcanic scenery here, including gorgeous white cliffs, like a volcanic Dover. There are hiking trails along the cliffs, as well as a beautiful viewpoint. The nearby village of Igo is my pick as the island's prettiest, located in highlands overlooking a stunning bay, framed by volcanic scenery.
Nakamura - The village of Nakamura has more rocky cliffs, as well as a pretty little beach.
Jodogoaura - Another well known spot, with lots of little rocky islets, and dramatic cliffs, some so dramatic that they have fallen down and destroyed the hiking trails. Less visited (and indeed less beautiful) than Shirashima, there are still some hiking trails that remain here, as well as nice viewpoints.
Kuroshima - This is a small offshore island composed of hexagonal column rocks, a la the Giant's Causeway. The coastline here is very beautiful. There's a viewpoint on the main road, high above the sea, where you get nice views of the island.
INLAND SCENERY
We didn't visit much in the interior, but the mountains of Dogo hold various attractions, including a notable waterfall, some old cedar trees, and the habitat of the endemic Oki salamander. Many roads to these places are currently closed, making them difficult to visit. In the north of the island, there are some pretty highlands, including grasslands grazed by cows. Pheasants are also quite common.
CULTURAL SIGHTS
Nature Museum - Just across the street from the port is a nature museum, dedicated to the island's natural geography. It's not the most interesting museum in the country, but will at least teach you about some of the Oki's unique wildlife.
Tamawakasu-Mikoto Jinja - Within walking distance of the port, this shrine is the island's top cultural site. Three buildings here - the Honden, a small gate, and a house built for the shrine's priest - are an Important Cultural Property (ICP). The Honden is a large, beautiful structure in a style unique to the Oki islands. There's also a very old cedar tree on the shrine grounds. Next door is an interesting little museum, housing just a handful of historic artifacts. The highlight here are three copper artifacts from the Nara era - two bells used by official envoys traveling between the Oki's and the capital (Nara/Kyoto), as well as an official provincial government tax seal. All three are very rare official government articles of the era.
Kokubun-ji - Oki's Kokubun-ji bizarrely charges an entrance fee, though there isn't much to see. The temple burned down once in the 19th century and then again in the 20th century, so its old statues have been reduced to little more than charcoal. Slightly more interesting are a small collection of Nara era roof tiles which have been dug up at the site. The Kokubun-ji is also one of two locations in the Oki's which claims to have been the site of Go-Daigo's "palace", so there are also the ruins of that, as well as a small shrine dedicated to the former Emperor on the temple grounds.
Mizuwakasu Jinja - In the north of the island, in one of its larger valleys, this is another interesting shrine. The highlight here is the large, imposing Honden, built in the unusual local style. There are two museums next to the shrine. We only visited one, which is housed in a couple of interesting historic buildings, both of which were moved here from elsewhere on the island. One is an early Meiji Western-style office building, which once housed the Oki's main government offices; the other is a traditional farmhouse.
Isemikoto Jinja - If you can't get enough of Oki-style Honden, this shrine, in the pretty village of Kumi, has one dating from the late Edo period. It's noted for its rather distinctive carvings of dragons on the front of the building.
Tsuma Boathouses - The village of Tsuma is noted for its unusual boat houses, built on the beach. We didn't get a chance to visit.
Sasaki Residence - In the barely inhabited village of Kama, this residence is considered the best preserved old house on the Oki's. It was built for the local village chief, at a time when the village was much more prosperous. It's an impressive, rather upscale house, open with a ticket. If you speak Japanese, the caretaker will try and explain just about every artifact in the house to you, and may even inexplicably ply you with croissants.
Nishinoshima
The largest of the Dozen islands, this is a big step down from Dogo, with a fraction of its population. There are three main population centers, none of which is more than a small village: Beppu, where the main port and bulk of facilities are; a network of villages spread out around a very pretty bay, right in the middle of the island; and the very sleepy Urago, which has a modern coffee shop to help wake you up, but little else. The highlight of Nishinoshima is its incredible coastal cliffs.
KUROKI-GOSHO
Very close to Beppu port, this is the other site in the Oki's which claims to have once housed Emperor Go-Daigo. There's little to see at the site itself, though its located at the top of a little hill, and offers nice views. There's a tiny museum at the site, where Go-Daigo's story is told.
MT. TAKUHI
The tallest mountain in the Dozen islands, this is the remnant of the main volcano which created the islands in the first place. It's surrounded by a large caldera, most of which is under the sea, though the northernmost section connects Mt. Takuhi to the rest of Nishinoshima Island. The mountain is about 450 meters high. You can drive a car up to 210 meters, but from there on you must proceed on foot. About halfway up the mountain is a dramatic shrine, with its Honden installed partially within a natural cave formed out of a massive volcanic rock. The shrine has very pretty buildings, which are an ICP. From the shrine grounds, as well as the top of the mountain itself, there are spectacular views all over Dozen and beyond.
CANAL AND BAY
In the middle of Nishinoshima sits a large, and very pretty, bay. At the north end of the bay, a small canal cut in the Taisho era effectively cuts the island in two. There are some nice cliffs here, as well as a beach. The bay is best appreciated from the large bridge that stands at its mouth.
YURAHIME JINJA - The most important shrine on the island, Yurahime Jinja has very pleasant, though rather modern, buildings. The shallow inlet next to the shrine is said to be full of squid, though I didn't see any when I visited.
CLIFFS - This is what the island is known for! Most of Nishinoshima is essentially the edge of the caldera of a massive, extinct volcano, and the volcanic forces combined with erosion have created some of the most stunning scenery in the country - I kid you not! The north and western coasts of the island are full of incredibly impressive coastal cliffs. The best known and most easily accessible cliffs are called Kuniga and Matengai, and are linked by a 2km long hiking trail. Matengai sits 250 meters above the sea, at the top of a nearly vertical wall of volcanic rock. It is quite something! The clifftops are noted for unusual vegetation (for Japan), including lots of grasslands, and horses and cows are allowed to graze freely here. It's thus a rare spot in Japan where hikers can come toe to toe with cows and horses out doing their own thing. In addition to the cliffs, there's more volcanic fun, including lots of rocky islets, and a famous natural arch. It really is a beautiful and unique spot! Further to the south are more cliffs, as well as a couple of notable viewpoints. It's also possible to take a tourist boat around the cliffs, with sailings leaving from the previously mentioned Urago.
Ama
Ama is the flattest of the Dozen islands, or at least the north is. A couple of pretty valleys here are the only place in the Dozen's where rice is farmed. The south of the island is hilly and sparsely populated, with a rather wild cape at the very southern tip, where there's a little lighthouse. There are only a select number of places of interest on Ama.
AKIYA COAST - This is a beautiful little spot by the sea, in the northeast of the island. There are some lovely red-and-black volcanic cliffs here, an isolated little cove, lots of rocky islets off-shore. It's the island's number one scenic spot. It's been very lightly developed, with a public toilet, very simple campsite, and little else.
KONKO-JI - This temple has some kind of connection to Emperor Go-Toba, though I have no idea what it is. In fact, the temple itself is difficult to comprehend. It's very basic! It lies at the top of a tall, steep hill, and the main reason to come up is for the great views over the island.
GO-TOBA SITES - Emperor Go-Toba spent nineteen years on Ama, and a cluster of sites around his former "palace" (anywhere that an Emperor lives is automatically a palace!) celebrate the island's most famous resident. The ruins of the temple where he stayed are kind of interesting, with an old well and pond. Nearby is Go-Toba's main tomb. Apparently, most of the old emperor was buried here, though some of his bones were taken to Kyoto, where they were buried in Ohara. A separate tomb for him sits there, and is also open to the public, just behind the famous Sanzen-in. Back on Ama, there's also a small museum dedicated to Go-Toba (who was a noted poet and man of letters, as well as a failed government rebel), as well as the very grand Oki Shrine, dedicated to the Emperor, which dates from at least the early Edo period, though its present form is from the 20th century.
MURAKAMI HOUSE - Close to the Oki Shrine, this is a rather grand mansion built by a family of local notables. It's usually open as a museum, but is currently closed. The grounds are open, and are rather pretty.
Chibu
We didn't have time to visit Dozen's smallest inhabited island, with just 600 people and 600 cows. It appears to be little more than one, rather big hill. The main port, which appears to have very little, is on the north side of the island, though the main settlement is in the south. The island's best known tourist attraction are grand red cliffs, on the west coast. Presumably there's the chance to see some cows on the way there.

2020.09.22 17:51 LJWill91 I am 29 years old, make $170,000 base (plus $30-40,000 bonus and $30,000 vesting stock), live in Seattle and work as a Creative Project Manager in Tech

A little about me: I'm 29, British and Queer :) I moved from England to the US as part of a work transfer three years ago and love Seattle. My life has changed a lot over the past few years, I realized I was gay, moved to Seattle, stopped talking to my toxic mum, had a lotttttt of therapy and moved in with my partner, L. My financial knowledge has gone from 0-60 in the past three years thanks to personalfinance, a few finance books and moneydiariesactive. I'm an open book so ask any qs you'd like! I hope you enjoy!
Section One: Assets and Debt
Net Worth: $283,000
Retirement Balance:
401k $30,000
UK 401k $22,000
Index Funds $155,000
(Tip: I used the bankrate.com retirement calculator to figure out how much I actually need to invest for retirement each year. This really cleared up what I need to invest as a minimum each year to hit my retirement target, before I can decide what to live off and save for shorter term purchases e.g. a house.)
Equity if you're a homeowner:
$52,000 in an apartment in the UK (worth $275,000) that I’m selling right now. I bought it with my ex-boyfriend five years ago and loved living there at the time, but owning it since moving to the US has been a bad idea – it hasn’t gone up in value at all since I purchased in 2015, the rent my tenants pay doesn’t cover the mortgage and it requires lots of costly maintenance.
When I bought it, I received $12,000 towards a down payment from my mum. I have three brothers and I'm expecting brothers 2 and 3 to receive the same, but not brother 1, so I'm planning to give half of the $12,000 to him when the sale goes through.
Also, when I sell, I either owe $0, $15,000 or $30,000 to the US government as part of a tax law that assumes I've made profit because of changing exchange rates. Every accountant I speak to has a different answer, so let's see in January! At some point I'll use the rest of the money towards a down payment for a house in the US.
Savings account balance:
Emergency Fund $17,500
Holiday Fund $7,000
Fun Money $4500 (I might end up investing half of this in index funds)
Fund to cover capital gains tax for my 2020 tax bill $2029
Checking account balance:
I leave $1,500 per pay check in my account for living costs, plus enough to cover my rent and bills. I pay for all of my living costs on an Amex Delta credit card to get points and pay it off in full each month.
Credit card debt: $0
Student loan debt: $0. I completed a music degree in England (this cost $35,000 for three years of tuition, rent and living costs). My parents paid for my tuition, rent and 50% of my living costs, and I worked for them during the holidays to cover 50% of my living costs. Once I joined the working world, I realized how much of a big deal it was that they paid for my education and what a head start it gave me having no student debt. I am very grateful.
Anything else that’s applicable to you:
I had a privileged start, my parents paid for my education and I received $12,000 towards a house down payment. I graduated from University at 21, and whilst I have been financially independent since then, there is an emotional safety net that comes with knowing I could go home to my Dad if I needed to.
After working in England from 21-26, I moved to Seattle with $20,000 saved for retirement, $40,000 in my UK apartment and no other savings. My salary doubled moving to the US and as a result I’ve been able to save a lot over the past few years. A few years ago, my Dad suggested I read How To Own The World. It gave me a really great introduction to lots of different aspects of finance (inflation, saving, types of accounts, retirement etc) so I read a few other finance books, started following personalfinance and have had a massive shift in my attitude towards finances.
Section Two: Income and Income Progression
I graduated with a music degree aged 21 and decided that, although I loved music, I wasn't passionate enough to fight for a career in such a competitive field. Instead, I decided I'd like to explore a career that involved lots of people interaction and could pay well: sales. Since then I've ended up working in sales, marketing and engineering, all in tech.
- 2013 - $25,000 - I joined a tech company as a sales graduate selling Healthcare software. Direct selling wasn't a great match for my skillset.
- 2014 - $37,000 plus $30,000 in commission - After nine months, my manager suggested I moved to a technical sales role in the same company and I was given a $12,000 raise. I loved this role! Lots of presenting in formal sales processes.
- 2015 - $47,000 plus $30,000 bonus - After playing a major part in $3.5 million in sales in one year, I negotiated an additional $10,000.
- 2016 - $70,000 plus $30,000 bonus and a $5,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) - I moved to a big tech company in a similar technical sales role and my salary jumped significantly.
- 2018 - $137,000 plus $30,000 bonus, an end of year $25,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) and a one off $25,000 stock award for good performance (vesting over five years) - I relocated with the same company to the US in a marketing role and my salary doubled!
- 2019 - $160,000 plus $30,000 bonus and a $25,000 stock award (vesting over 5 years) - I took a new role in engineering as a Creative PM and my salary increased by 15%. A major driver for moving was being told promotions were off the table in my old team unless you had been in role for three years.
- 2020 - $170,000 plus $42,000 bonus and a $48,500 stock award (vesting over five years) - I was promoted in role and my salary increased.
It blows my mind that I earn this much money for a role that I enjoy so much. I'm very lucky.
Main Job Monthly Take Home: $8,500 per month, after maxing my 401k, contributing $510 to my HSA and healthcare/taxes etc.
Any Other Income:
Having received stock awards every year for the past 5 years, I now have stock vesting every year that adds up to about $30,000 pre-tax. I immediately sell and invest in diversified index funds via Vanguard to minimize the risk that would come with having a large amount of my savings in the same company that pays my paycheck (if the company tanks, I'd lose my job and the stock would plummet in value).
I also receive an annual bonus of between 15-30%. This year it was 27% (an amazing, unexpected surprise), it’s usually around 20%. Last year I invested 90% and spent 10% on a vacation to Japan. This year it was a lot higher, so I invested 66%, saved 21% for moving costs/vacations next Summer and kept the rest as a fun fund.
I also get $1050 in rent for my UK apartment, but the mortgage is $1150, so I make a loss.
Other:
My income is completely separate to my partner, L. We take turns paying for groceries/meals out/trips and assume it evens out to 50/50. Right now, I earn a lot more than L, who is a medical resident and earns about $100,000, with no student debt, but we both live off about the same amount per year as I'm focused so heavily on investing.
Section Three: Expenses
Rent and utilities: $1,300/month for my half of a two bed, two bath in Fremont. I moved in with L, last month and we split the rent 50/50. Previously my rent was $2060/month for an open one bed in the Capitol Hill.
Extra costs for UK mortgage/management company fees: $500
Investment/savings: Until this month, I was investing $2,000- $2,500. Now that I’ve reached my investment target for the year (a combination of my bonus, savings and vested stock), I’m re-routing that to a savings fund in a HYSA for next Summer. I’m planning to relocate to the East Coast with L, and hoping to take the summer off between jobs.
Donations: $130/month to Black Lives Matter, Save the Children, an LGBT charity in England and a COVID relief fund. These are also matched by my employer 100%.
Cellphone: $30 in a shared plan with some friends
Wifi: $60 Subscriptions: Netflix $15, Amazon $14, AppleCare $12
Regular therapy: $160/month for two sessions with my UK therapist and $180/session roughly every 2-3 weeks with my tantra coach.
Living: I budget $3000 per month for living, therapy and tantra.
COVID-19: In current COVID times in Seattle, cases are being managed well by the city, we are in phase 2 and can meet up with 5 people per week who aren't in our household network and can go to restaurants with people in our household.
Tuesday:
7am - Bonus day! I start to think about what to do with some of the money in my fun fund. On my wishlist: Glittery Dr Martens 🥾, a vacuum that also steams floors, everything on the Olive website and lift tickets for 🎿 over winter.
8am - Work work work work work 🎶 Every day starts with calls with my team in India to review their product configuration progress. My role focuses around writing product pitches/demonstrations that sellers will deliver to customers. My days are spent talking to sellers about common customer requests, writing narratives to present the value of the products and designing screens to be built by my engineers/consultants.
9am - I spend $50 on an Amazon order for 🧼,🧴and English 🍫.
12pm - I accidentally start a small kitchen fire heating some heat pads in L’s dutch oven. The fire department was involved🔥😭
2pm - I have a call with a design lead about potential roles in their team. I'd love to expand my skillset into videos and 🙋🏼‍♀️
3pm - Our Imperfect Foods box arrives. This week we got eggs, veggies, fruits, goats cheese and gnocchi. $25, but I paid for this last week.
5pm - I go for an early dinner with L at Manolin to celebrate my bonus/destress after the fire🍴🍷 Restaurants are open in Seattle at 50% capacity and everyone wears masks. I pay. $150
8pm - Listen to records with L 🎶 and fall asleep at 9.30.
Total: $200
Wednesday:
8am - More calls, more feedback, more unblocking the engineers👩🏼‍💻
10am - I FaceTime catch up with my Dad ❤️ He just bought a house in the English countryside with his partner, L, and he gives me more excited updates about how renovations are going.
2pm - I get some excellent feedback about yesterday’s call, the manager wants me in his team 🙌🏻
6pm - Vegetarian taco night and cocktails with L ❤️🌮
8pm - I order a replacement pan after destroying L’s. $198
8.30pm - We start watching Normal People 📺
Total: $198
Thursday:
10am - My youngest brother schedules his first therapy appointment! 🙌🏻 I have three brothers and two are at high school or university and aren’t working. I believe we would all benefit from therapy, so this year I offered to pay for both of them. Now all four of us have been at some point ❤️ $59
12pm - Fire fighting at work, trying to fix products that keep breaking in time to deliver product demos to sellers next week 🔥💻
3pm - I do a trial recording with my colleague for a broadcast next week. 🎥🎞 The broadcast goes out to somewhere between 250,000-1,000,000 people. The broadcast is usually in a studio, but because of covid we’re shooting at home this time.
5pm - L comes home with a cuuuute new haircut 💁🏻‍♀️ and a new burner ring for our stove after it was damaged in the 🔥. L pays.
7pm - We make pizzas 🍕 and talk about what time togetheco existing/apart looks like for each of us. Moving in together is big and it helps to understand what makes each other feel good/not so good. The conversation is emotional and really helpful.
Total: $59
Friday:
8am - I have a morning of calls with India/England/US agreeing next steps/fire fighting 🔥
11am - I reflect on how writing a money diary is making me feel guilty about spending money, even if my “normal” spending fits into my budget and my “fun” spending comes from my bonus. One to talk about in therapy I think.
4pm - Another busy afternoon jumping between calls. A good rehearsal for the broadcast ✔️ good feedback on our demo content ✔️ next week planned out in Outlook ✔️
5pm - I meet with my tantra coach for a two hour session. I originally started going to see them to learn more about sex (🙌🏻) but have learned that tantra is much bigger than that, it’s an eastern tradition that is centered around connecting with your heart and body and being present. It’s had a massive impact on my ability to get out of my head. Today we focused on simple body exercises to get me more connected to my body. $200
7pm - L started a 30 hour shift this morning so I have a solo date night ❤️ bath-time + Quorn chicken nugget wraps (I love eating in the bath 😆) + TikTok ✌🏻
Total: $200
Saturday:
8am - I wake up and listen to Jameela Jamil and Katherine Ryan in the iWeigh podcast.
9am - I meditate 🧘🏼‍♀️. I started meditating 3-7 times per week six months ago using the Headspace app and it was a great intro. I’ve been resisting meditating for the past two weeks, and going to see my tantra coach has given me the umph to start again today. I do 20 minutes unguided.
10am - L comes home from work and we catch up before they sleep 💤 I spend the day in the bath, reading The Untethered Soul, eating fake sausage patties, eggs and sautéed tomatoes on toast, on reddit, watching Normal People and napping 🛀📚
6pm - I see my two best friends, N&V, a queer couple in Seattle ❤️ they know how to make me feel loved and buy all of my favorite foods for dinner ❤️ I uber there and back wearing a mask. $30
Total: $30

7am - I wake up and meditate🧘🏼‍♀️
8am - Catch up calls with the India team. I have a fairly slow morning after that, agreeing deliverables for the week with our team.
12pm - I make sweet potato tacos for lunch using up ingredients in the fridge 🙌🏻🌮
4pm - I do a recording for the broadcast on Wednesday. Oh hey there hair, makeup and formal work clothes, where have you been hiding? 💄
5.30pm - L and I listen to a Lake Street Dive concert online on the porch 🎵
7.30pm - L buys groceries and we head for a socially distanced picnic outside.
Total: $0
Food + Drink: $160
Fun / Entertainment: $0
Home + Health: $644
Clothes + Beauty: $40
Transport: $30
Other: $198
Weekly Total: $1072
Lastly, reflect on your diary!
Writing this diary was good for me! It made me see some of the small, happy moments that happen each day.
All in all, apart from the vacuum that I bought with my bonus, this is average spending for me. I'm very conscious of not spending more than $700/week. This means if I have more expensive days, like days when I have to pay for therapy or tantra, I'll make sure I balance it out on other days.
I feel incredibly lucky that I have a high salary that gives me an incredibly good quality of life and enables me to save for the future. I have an "it's too good to be true" fear, so I'm focused on investing a lot right now to set myself up long term.

It took a dump like the rest of the Market Monday and is sitting 7% lower than Fridays Close. Great dip buy opportunity. I started with a small entry position today (9/22) of 500 shares @ $3.70 and plan to slowly add into as we get closer to the PDUFA date.
Heres why I'm bullish on BCRX
Galidesivir, a potential therapy for COVID-19, Marburg virus disease and Yellow Fever, This is another super bullish indicator for BCRX. NIAID the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has awarded BioCryst a new contract totaling $44 million, and has added approximately $3 million to its existing contract to support the development of galidesivir. The completion of parts 1 of 2 of an ongoing clinical trial of galidesivir in Brazil is scheulded to be on Sept 30.
BioCryst has so many promising ongoing developments
berotralstat (BCX7353) PDUFA Dec 3rd 2020, an oral treatment for hereditary angioedema, Berotralstat Japanese Sakigake approval expected Q4 2020, BCRX will receive $20M milestone from partner Torii
BCX9930, an oral Factor D inhibitor for the treatment of complement-mediated diseases,
BCX9250, an ALK-2 inhibitor for the treatment of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive.
and mentioed above Galisdeivir.
RAPIVAB (peramivir injection), a viral neuraminidase inhibitor for the treatment of influenza, is BioCryst’s first approved product and has received regulatory approval in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the European Union. Post-marketing commitments for RAPIVAB are ongoing.
Q3 Earnings Nov 10, should be a good one for them. EPS this year is at 4%
Heres even more reasons why I'm super bullish on BCRX
  1. BCRX is set to start generating revenues with ORLADEYO before the end of the year.
  2. BCRX has almost $200 million in cash, enough to last one year without an equity raise.
  3. Data for 9930 in both naïve and poor responders is coming. At the beginning of Aug 2020, the FDA granted Fast Track designation for BioCryst Pharmaceuticals’ oral Factor D inhibitor, BCX9930, for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Fast Track status provides for more frequent interaction with the FDA review team and a rolling review of the marketing application. Dr. William Sheridan, chief medical officer of BioCryst
  4. Information from Part 1 of the COVID trial with galidesivir before September 30th. Another huge PR catalyst but they are known to be late on PR so expect by end of Q4
  5. The rationale for the use of galidesivir is based on its broad-spectrum antiviral activity and also on the positive results of Gilead’s Remdesivir, which shares the mechanism of action.
  6. In animal studies, galidesivir has demonstrated survival benefits against dangerous pathogens, including Ebola, Marburg, Yellow Fever, and Zika viruses. Galidesivir also showed activity in vitro against more than 20 ribonucleic acid (“RNA”) viruses, including coronaviruses.
  7. A market cap of just $692 million.
  8. 20% of the float is short compared to 15% in July, 25% in August. upward pressure will squeeze these shorts out. 5% of shorts felt the pain and has moved on
  9. RSI of 42 starting to turn higher signaling a move higher is coming.
  10. BCRX stock has remained above the 200-day moving average since April, encouraging dip-buying. Sept 8 dip to 3.57 tips the line but strong buy volume sends it back above.
  11. CFO bought $220,000 worth of BCRX stock at $4.08 a share, some might not think this is a lot of money in today’s world, note his yearly salary is only $480,000. He obviously knows something or wouldn’t be putting such a large percentage of his salary into the company
  12. if you dig deeper they had an offering at the end of May 2020 to sell 100M of its common stock at $4.50 a share. Sure this may affect short term investors but the misconception that all offerings are bad is false. It depends what they are doing with the money they raised and BCRX seems to be using it quite well with all their developments. BCRX ran up to pre offering highs to $5.80 in July. $5.50-6 resistance levels BCRX will challenge as PDUFA runs closer for berotralstat and any galidesivir PR will send this one flying.
  13. they been posting jobs like crazy here's a recent one posted 3 days ago https://www.indeed.com/m/jobs?q=Biocryst+Pharmaceuticals
If you read everything, thank you as it took some time to write up. If you scrolled down to the end without reading any of it this applies to you too.
Strap on your jet packs and get some BCRX get some! ☮

It's one of those watches whose design just works. I'm lucky enough to have won an SBGJ217 so I don't need this but it will definitely make someone very happy. It has a 39.7mm case with 19mm lugs. The brown alligator strap is insanely soft and comfortable and has a lot of wear left. It is a complete set with a card dated from early 2018. Good luck!

2020.09.19 19:44 OneSilverRaven Raven Reviews: IxSHE TELL Part 2, Love and War are NEVER Fair.

ALMOST A CHARACTER
When looking back on the first part of this review after I had posted it I felt like perhaps I had given the protagonist (Ninomiya Hajime) a poor representation. P-kun, or Protagonist-kun if you prefer, is a term I use to describe a VNs POV character when they are... less then developed. This isn't necessarily a condemnation of a novel (Yukizakura is a pretty good novel with this type of protagonist) but I'd be lying if I said I didn't use the term derogatorily. I am not blind to the fact that the appeal of "blank slate" protagonists in this genre specifically is higher then most, but I think the evidence is overwhelming that more beloved novels have more developed protagonists. Shirogane Takeru, Toomi Yuna, Emiya Shirou and others might not be what most people think of when recalling their stories but their is no doubt in my mind replacing them with a vehicle for easier self insertion would have been a mistake, as each is crucial to the feel of the narrative. Depending upon your opinion of DDLC as a parody of traditional novels you might even reference its call outs of the POV character as recognition that the vast majority of VN protagonists are not only underdeveloped but participate in actions that from an outside perspective they have no motivation to do. So when I reference IxSHE Tell and its protagonist I feel slightly bad about including him on the same list as Takao Ibuki rather then giants like Okabe Rintarou because he has SOME personality at least. So i'll make a compromise, just this once. When I can justify it I'll refer to the protagonist by name, and when he slips into self insert territory I'll call him out for it with P-kun, so if you see me switching back and forth in this review that's why. Part 2 is going to cover my thoughts on the common route and its assets so lets dive right in and talk about the title screen.
I DON'T THINK THAT CHAIR ACTUALLY APPEARS ONCE IN THE NOVEL
IxSHE Tell starts almost immediately upon launch with a loud trumpet filled intro track over a picture of five girls tightly clustered in front of a posh throne. A few weeks ago when I published my first review of HuniePop I commented at length about my personal pet peeve for title cards and this one is... not very good. For starters the characters are much closer together then on the promotional art picture of the exact same scene (the characters even have the same poses) and that tightness clutters the left side of the menu uncomfortably. The picture on VNDB is MUCH better and not only lets each character breath more but puts emphasis on the empty seat which was presumably left open for the reader. The draped curtains in the background and the bright gold of the title clash with the music as the upbeat tempo and almost party like tone conflict with what looks to be a much calmer and upper class if unusual arrangement formed by the heroines. As a group shot, this title card fails to show anything but the most superficial traits of its subjects. I guess you could gather Kozuka is younger then the others from her expression and clothing but her personality doesn't really fit the tone she's putting off with her body language and saying you could guess Yamabuki is a tsudere or Yuuki is confident from their posture is a stretch at bast. Muv-Luv's title card isn't PERFECT but it's a much better example of how things can be done right in a group shot where every character has something unique to convey their personality to the reader. Pretend you've never seen either of these novels before and compare just these two images on VNDB, the list of things you can guess about one game's characters is easily triple the length of the other. So not a great omen for whats going to come but who knows maybe the title card at 100% completion will be better...
BEING POPULAR AND FAMOUS
In the past year of 201X (Seriously? Mega Man style date? What is this a secret Sci-Fi novel? If you're so worried about accurately depicting a level of technology just leave the year unspecified nobody cares! All you're doing with this is drawing attention to it.) the novel opens with a strange bit of narration in which the student newspaper (presumably) talks about the virtues of P-kun... okay. And tells the reader about him by calling him the hero student council president. So we know this novel isn't compensating for anything out of the gate at least I mean we're JUST the legendary president of the student council it's not like we're also drowning in women or anything...
Anyway cut to an introduction to our first Heroine Yamabuki Yoshino presented with a cute title card claiming she "Can't fully hide her true feelings" so look forward to embarrassing the soul out of her all game. She's okay I guess, her introduction is twenty minutes of nagging P-kun in her capacity as vice president while everyone tells P-kun how great he is and stuff. Then she falls over for a pantsu CG and the whole thing is so forced and unbelievable it comes off as a joke which is REALLY not want I wanted my FIRST interaction with this girl to be like but hey maybe you like seeing strong women humiliated to the tune of epic suspenseful music more suited to a poorly done Lord of the Rings video game then a VN, no judgment.
The rest of the student council, all one of them, is introduced (Hakuwa Shoukichi) as well as presumably the president (Kozuka Yui) and vice president (Ninomiya Aoba) of the neighboring sister school who's name is unimportant enough I'm not going to bother looking it up but it directly feeds its students into P-kun's academy so thats nice. Aoba is P-kun's sister and an adorable brat, she and Shoukichi spend the entire novel as one note characters i'll discuss in detail later but both are pretty enjoyable to have around. For story purposes all you need to know is Shoukichi has a crush on the school idle and does all the student council grunt work while Aoba is three steps down from spoiled rotten and oscillates between totally obnoxious and sickeningly sweet and clingy. Oh and she's friends with Yui I guess.
Speaking of which Yui gets her own title card "Both childlike and mature" (THAT'S not code for anything) and has the best romance introduction in the game. Hajime pulls her aside and tells her that as a fellow student body president he wants to ask her for her advice. He's having doubts what he's doing is the right thing. Today's student council meeting was all about the abolition of the centuries old ban on romantic relationship he had pretty much single handedly championed and gotten passed and how it was going to affect the school. Yoshino, again, his vice president, had originally run against him as a supporter of the ban and still speaks out against it despite working with him diligently as he was the people's choice. Hajime expresses his fears for the future and openly questions if this new freedom will come at the cost of some people's comfort who will now be subject to unwanted advances. Yui's response is so well crafted I can't do it justice in this summery but she asks point blank if she is the only one who knows Hajime feels this way. When he reply's affirmatively she takes responsibility for all his fears, and dismisses them. As the only person who COULD blame him, by choosing not to she makes it so their is now no one who does. Again the scene is MUCH better then this but I still have over half the cast to introduce so take my word for it, GREAT first impression from Yui.
Next comes Yuuki Ayaka, the school idol and two year winner of some beauty pageant. Apparently she's voiced by Oohashi Ayuru who is an idol herself which is a neat touch but her introduction here is UNBEARABLE... Her Heroine quirk is "Fary-Tale ideas of romance" which translates to referring to herself as "Perfect and Kawaii" every third paragraph and rejecting the advances of over a dozen guys, including poor Shoukichi, and some unnamed student directly in front of P-kun and Yui on their walk home. Realizing P-kun is there, she flat out presses her butt on his groin while saying to his face he, as the schools most popular boy, is the only man she could accept the confession of. Which prompts P-kun to freak out internally as he apparently has a crush on her and is a member of her "fan club" whatever that means. Apparently Ayaka and Yui know each other and Ayaka is teasingly warm to Yui's teasingly cold, bet that's going to come up later. Anyway P-kun gets Ayaka to blush after she DECIMATES poor off screen confession bro and the scene ends.
We pick up with P-kun walking home with his childhood friend Hanamori Shiori who I THINK is the front runner for best hair but we'll have to see. Her quirk is "Madly in love, single-minded devotion," and she will oscillate between too shy to function and creepily obsessed with P-kun for the rest of the novel until the romance branches. Her scene here is completely forgettable and uninteresting because the only thing that matters is that you know she's P-kun's childhood friend.
At the dorms Hajime and Shiori apparently live at together with Yoshino (Because THAT'S fair to the other heroines.) a new student is transferring in after the semester already started in true anime style and she immediately latches onto Hajime during their introduction. This is Koshimizu Kasumi, the apparent LOSER of best hair by popular vote which is a darn shame because the indigo tints on her tips are pretty cute, but that's a topic for later. Apparently she knew Hajime, Aoba and Shiori from their childhood where she was really sickly and Hajime would come visit her and bring her the schoolwork she missed. This left such a huge impression on the girl she developed her quirk "Pure, unabashed adoration" of Hajime and now that she's all better and able to go to public school again ten years after they met she's here to reunite with her white knight. Honestly it's a pretty touching story that feels a little rushed but OH BOY wait till we get the resolution to this one down the line it is going to get SO much more painful to read.
But enough of that, it's time to meet the best character in the game Hanamori Yasumasa! Yasumasa is Shiori's little brother, which makes him YOUR little brother by right of childhood friendship, and he's adorable. Your introduction to him is at the last meeting of the club you preside over together hilariously called The Horny Brigadier Brotherhood with the sole goals of creating and maintaining a free, secure network to browse porn at the school and abolish the relationship ban. Today's meeting disbands the group as Hajime steps down from his position as general (Which is weird right I mean can you even be the president of two groups simultaneously in Japanese schools I didn't know that was a thing but regardless) and Yasumasa is the vice president. When one of the members gets too rowdy Yasu threatens to suck him off and I'm going to have to stop this whole review for a second because that one line is my favorite in the whole novel.
Full context, I am a bisexual man. I lean about 60/40 in favor of women and didn't discover this part of my sexuality until I was in college, so the majority of my taste is centered around more traditional media rather then BL or Yaoi, but I do dabble in that as well. Yasu as a bisexual character is something I almost never get to see because in the words of my real life little brother "Japan only has two sexualities it recognizes, straight and fetish." Even setting that aside though for all the LGBTQ+ representation in American and Japanese media the B part of that is actually really hard to find good examples of in media ESPECIALLY male versions. They exist, but in recent years especially what little their is often gets drowned beneath a sea of purely homosexual characters and stories so its harder and harder to find. I can't tell you how excited I was to have this opportunity presented to me to see a good bisexual character because this game has a real chance to positively portray him and might even give the barest note of something between him and Hajime. I wasn't expecting a full romance route or anything, but their has to be a failure route in this game, and THAT is the perfect place to put something. It doesn't have to be flashy, maybe just a confession scene where Hajime, who rejected every one of these five girls, is approached by Yasu who questions him about why he's still single. It could end with a kind rejection, CG optional, or maybe even a kiss after the fade to black if they want to spoil me but this is a golden egg I'm BEGGING you Japan don't waste this...
After the meeting Hajime returns to his room and the narrative shifts to view the three love interests he boards with in the bath. Now I'm by no means a pearl clutching reactionary, but their is literally no reason for this scene to take place in the bath outside of Echii. If you didn't install the H-patch the scene is bland and has absolutely no character sprites. If you did the camera hugs the largest tits in the room as the girls talk. This conversation could easily have been anywhere else in the building but whatever the first CG in this game was an up-skirt pantsu shot so I guess this isn't as egregious as THAT. This does give me a good opportunity though to mention I WILL be including the H-patch content in this review but I'll be sectioning it off as much as possible to it's own subsection. When I eventually get to the romance routes I'll be glazing over everything Echii but this particular scene was kind of unavoidable to mention because Kasumi announces that she is going to confess to Hajime in front of the other two girls... and then immediately gets out of the tub and does it! I don't know why I find that so surprising but we as readers met this character literally twenty minutes ago in and out of game so this is REALLY forward but I guess points for confidence.
Kasumi's confession takes place in P-kun's room and is... a mixed bag. On the one hand her story, that she was a sickly girl P-kun would visited frequently ten years ago to bring homework and spend time with before she moved away for her health thus causing her to motivate herself to get better so she can one day reunite with her white knight is touching and romantic but also feels kind of rushed for a reason I can't quite explain. Maybe its the way she tells the story but I get the sense it would have been more impactful if it had a few more sentences of build up somewhere but for what it is it's serviceable. Hajime, understandably, politely tells Kasumi the two of them just met kind of and while he's flattered she feels so strongly about him he can't return her feelings as of yet because he knows so little about her. So not fully rejecting her but not saying yes either, just a request to get to know her first. Then she trips on him and the camera zooms on her boobs. So that ruins the mood as Yoshino comes in to tell P-kun he's terrible.
A DAY OF CONFESSIONS
The second half of the prologue begins with Kasumi transferring into P-kun's class, because of course she is. the next five minutes are background nobodies saying she's pretty. After a time skip to lunch these murmurs of Kasumi's apparent good looks reach all the way to the third year classes apparently because Ayaka bursts into the class to see her new competition appalled that Kasumi has been here less then 14 hours and has already confessed to her "crush." After establishing that Ayaka and Kasumi are now maybe possibly rivals not only for P-kun's affections but the beauty contest crown as well Yui, who apparently ran all the way from the sister school, bursts into the room, catches her breath, and asks Ayaka point blank if she is also here to confess to P-kun. If all of this is sounding rushed don't worry it is.
Yui makes the kind gesture of apologizing in advance to Kasumi, who without question got to P-kun first, but nonetheless confesses her love in front of the whole class which WAY too embarrassing even for me and I can't help but think this poor girl is going to be RELENTLESSLY teased for this but whatever its cute she's so brave. Hajime gives her the same response he gave Kasumi, stating he wants to consider both of them before deciding, which is pretty cool of him not ganna lie. Kasumi takes it really well considering she's standing right there as it all happens and says she likes the idea the boy she loves is so popular so as many girls can confess to him as possible without bothering her. Everyone acts real mature about the whole situation and honestly the atmosphere of the whole thing is pretty sweet.
Then Ayaka interrupts the mood tripping over herself to ask P-kun out too.
Yeah, this is the worst confession in the game and her reasoning that "We should date because we're popular" is ridiculous. I don't have any jokes about this I just find it really poorly executed, 0 points.
After that P-kun is chased out of the classroom and down the hall by a ravenous group of girls in a brief break for levity before the novel establishes P-kun is apparently remembering arm day because he hoists himself into the student council room through the window, and will do so on a regular bases throughout the rest of the novel. Inside he's greeted by Shiori, Yoshino, Yui, and Kasumi as well as the entire student council important enough to have a sprite. Yoshino, unable to take the second hand embarrassment of the girls who already confessed to P-kun cooks up a ridiculous plan. She confesses her "love" for him, saying she wants to have the most debauched relationship possible to get the romance ban reinstated and end all this chaos. The only important part of this is that no one thinks she doesn't actually like him and just felt jealous so she did something rash. Aoba asks if her brother is going to die tomorrow to keep karmic balance and at this point I wouldn't be surprised if he did.
Anyway somehow this group chooses to be productive after all that and discussion begins on a PR campaign that the photography club, of which Shiori is a part, will be helping with. Hajime is nominated to be one of the models for a series of posters showing a model couple for students to look up to and the remaining girls fight over who will be his partner in the pictures. Everyone has their own reasons for why they should be picked but just when the reader may think they'll be given the first choice of the game Hajime (After a day of deliberation, a visit to the cafe Ayaka's parents own in which she works so SHE can be in on this, a much better and cuter scene then her introduction with Shiori at the dorm, and an admittedly pretty good fake out when Hajime gives a speech to the student body about the right to love in which we get a LOT of time with Yoshino.) just chooses Kasumi and the whole thing resolves... and then Shiori confesses her feelings in front of the other girls in the weirdest, most unsettling way possible.
In a CG where she twists her head to look over her shoulder as it tilts back, Shiori, backed by the most ominous track possible, expresses she has loved P-kun since childhood blah blah that parts not interesting she looks like a total Yandere. Like no joke if this was the only picture you had to go on, which at this point it is, you'd expect this game to devolve into Love Letter at some point down the line it is TERRIFYING! Gotta admit though her stance of "If all it takes to get a yes from you is to get to know each other then I should easily win because I've known you for years." is a pretty good argument. Seriously though I really can't stress this enough she isn't just setting off a red flag it's BLOOD red.
OKAY MAYBE THIS IS A LITTLE TOO POPULAR.
The first of five subsections in the common route opens with P-kun being chased by a hoard of women and a 90's style record scratch sonic movie opening "Yeah, thats me, if you wanna know how I got here we have to go back to-" in medias res. Now because of the way the heart system works my summery from this point on is going to SOUND really surface level and bare but for every scene I gloss over with a sentence it is entirely possible something takes place that may not be important to the STORY but was purely designed to endear the reader to the heroine featured in it. I'll point out any moments I feel are noteworthy but just because not much PLOT happens doesn't mean NOTHING happens alright?
P-kun has a flashback to this morning when Yoshino walked him to school and the two of them were mobbed by a hoard of girls who either want to ask him out or ask him about the girls who asked him out. He runs and abandons Yoshino to the wolves. Good boy Yasu meets up with Hajime for the cross view section which I will cover quickly. Yui's scene is just talking with Moka and getting pumped to go spend time with P-kun. Yoshino deals with the aftermath of being abandoned. Kasumi meets a cat girl and acts cute. Ayaka is swarmed by fans who agree to help her track down Hajime and Shiori has a panic attack. You see what I mean about these summaries? Each of those scenes was probably a ten minute read where not much happens but you're able to spend time with the heroines. I'd love to go line by line and talk about how charming some of these moments are but this review is already a monster so I'm just going to have to move on.
Yasu is being blackmailed into helping the mob of girls but he nobly sacrifices himself for p-kun to escape, fainting to distract them. Hajime ends up at his favorite spot on campus, the Clock Tower, where Ayaka visits him and they have a chat. Apparently Ayaka's fan club is working like a not so secret service to give her an advantage. Which I kind of want to say is cheating but will let slide because the other girls get outside help from their friends later in the novel. Anyway the mob finds them and Hajime flees again, this time to the auditorium where Kasumi gives him a lunch since he probably hadn't had a chance to eat yet and if you don't give her a heart for that you're a monster this is a legitimately sweet gesture. Hajime freaks out that she was keeping the milk she got him between her breasts, must be a Japanese thing because I don't know a single teenage boy who would care. Anyway you can guess what happens, they're found, he flees, this time he's pulled into an unused room by Shiori who sits on his lap, which is somehow NOT a CG but whatever I'm not salty. The title screen has her in a close position to what I imagined anyway. Anyway more girls and more fleeing. (How long has this been going on don't you kids have class to get to?) Now Hajime climbs trough the student council room window again and finds Yui who stuffs him under her desk to prevent him from being spotted and we get ANOTHER pantsu shot which is WAY over quota now and its not even tasteful. Like this is full on up the skirt vag view, for which Hajime is rightfully punished by... being crushed between Yui's thighs... are we sure this is before the Echii patch add ons?
The school day comes to an end when literally every heroine, Aoba, and Moka all end up at Ayaka's cafe (she had invited Hajime their in the earlier scene) and they talk for a bit about who Hajime is going to take on a date. For the first extra scene the reader gets to make that choice. Kasumi takes him to the mall where she clings to his arm, not a great scene but playful I guess. Yoshino runs into her political supporters against relationships and forces Hajime to pretend they are just out together as friends. Ayaka has a truly forgettable scene of walking with Hajime. But the two stand outs are definitely Shiori and Yui. Shiori has a scene I'm guessing is much more sexual in Japan where you measure her cup size, I don't know maybe that's your thing I just can't get over the *squish* sound effect it's like a bad anime skit. Yui calls you Onii-chan for the ONLY time in the novel and asks you to pet her head which is ADORABLE and it is a CRIME this is the only time this happens.
Next day, new batch of hearts.
Hajime runs out of ink for his pen... Theirs a joke here somewhere but I can't quite find it... anyway Yoshino offers him some of hers... god I really feel like I'm missing an innuendo here. Hajime turns her down and runs off to the campus store where he runs into cat girl and Ayaka. Apparently the store needs to sell a whole bunch of noodles nobody wants and cat girl is depressed about it. Ayaka offers to do a handshake event, which I guess is a Japanese thing where when you buy a certain amount of a product you get to touch a celebrity, and volunteers Hajime to be there too, so that's the plot of this subsection. All the girls find out about it and have their own reactions. The cross view section lays out their plans. Shiori skips class to be first in line. Ayaka uses her fame to advertise. Kasumi volunteers to work the store in exchange for four times the necessary amount of noodles to qualify for a handshake. Yoshino beats herself up over wanting to go to the event and not having a good excuse (She's really starting to lean into that aggressively shy personality about romance.) And Yui has a HEARTBREAKING scene where she thinks about how even the short distance between the two sister schools is a roadblock to her romantic prospects because unlike all the other girls she has to run every day to even SEE Hajime and they just have to go to class. She finds out about the handshake event but by then she knows she'll be way back in the line. Oh and Aoba has a scene where she tries to price gouge people and fails miserably, so that exists.
Anyway the actual event takes place and all the Heroines get a chance to interact with Hajime, the scene comes off as a bit comedic with Yui wearing a disguise so the artist can make use of the alternate lab coat outfit she has for no good reason. Yoshino's indecisiveness makes it so she gets in line too late to buy any noodles but Kasumi gives her half of the ones set aside for her day of work. Ayaka cracks some pretty good jokes, and the whole thing ends with a photo shoot for the whole group where Ayaka surprise kisses Hajime on the cheek. And Shiori is there too. Then you get the least interesting extra scenes in the game. I mean they aren't BAD they're just comparatively the worst of the bunch. Ayaka tells you she was embarrassed to kiss you but swears she wants to make your heart flutter. Yoshino acts embarrassed on the walk back from school and runs off. Hajime just kind of chats with Shiori, walks Yui home, and gives Kasumi her "handshake" after she teases you. Nothing terrible just nothing super interesting either.
FAVORITISM
The next scene is a fireworks festival and the best part of the whole game. I mean it if you could somehow only play one part of this novel THIS is the part you should do it is cute, fun, has great jokes, honestly its better then any of the romance routes so if this review has gotten you interested in the game I honestly recommend a blind look at it you'll have a blast.
The girls get into an argument about who is going to be Hajime's date to the festival and decide to play a game called King to determine the winner and while I would have LIKED to have this scene take multiple paths it always plays out the same way but the jokes here are top notch as the girls all try to one up each other. Theirs a CG of playing the Pocky game with Yoshino and it's adorable, honestly Yoshino kind of steals the show during the game till she passes out peso pon. Eventually the girls all drop out one by one until Kasumi wins and gets the right to your fireworks date. But tragedy! That night she calls Hajime saying she lost a special pendent and just can't leave the house without it. So he tells her to stay put since it's getting dark and goes to the school to look for it.
The cross view this time around has the first of two tied for worst scenes in the game and some really cute moments. Kasumi ruminates on how cool you are for understanding she can't go on the date with you and decides to go to the school to look there even though you told her not to, but she's the outlier because literally all the rest of the heroines plan a big party at Hajime's dorm on Aoba's suggestion. In Yui's scene we see her upset that she lost the game with the other girls and Aoba suggests the party to cheer her up, why the developer decided this scene needed to be done from both Yui's AND Aoba's perspective when Yui would have been fine on her own I don't know but I HATE when visual novels repeat themselves like that it's maddening. The difference is literally six lines of dialogue but to find it I have to sift through all this stuff I JUST read, it's a waist of time. If you want me to have both perspectives, wright the scene in two parts and put one after the other, like Aoba recommends the party and then Yui thinks about what a great friend she is shortly after ANYTHING ELSE but this. Shiori, Ayaka, and Yoshino all get invited and agree to go. Their's also a really nice scene of some random no name guys talking about Hajime and how jealous they are of him but it's not mean spirited or anything they act really casual about it, honestly this might be my personal favorite of the cross fades its just got a really nice atmosphere to it.
Hajime arrives at the school and tells off my boy Yasu for bringing a camera to school to catch couples getting frisky on campus during the fireworks which totally sounds like its going to happen given the recently lifted ban on romance making people lose themselves in the moment but Hajime is a total cock block and tells him to go home. After a long time searching Hajime bumps into Kasumi and just when they're about to lose hope and go home the fireworks start and a glint of light leads Kasumi right to her pendent on the ground. Overjoyed, but sad they missed their chance at a date, they head back to the dorm to find the party in full swing and have a great time. the extra scenes are all post festivities and range from decent to too cute to exist. Yui and Ayaka get walked home, nothing super interesting but sweet. Shiori helps clean things up and you do the dishes together like a married couple. But Kasumi and Yoshino definitely win this round. Yoshino, like a boo from Mario, inches closer to Hajime when he looks away but losses her nerve when he looks at her. Intentionally turning to see what she's trying to do but without looking directly at her he sees her creep up and lock pinkies with him with a triumphant "Yay! I did it!" under her breath. He responds by holding her hand and the two of them clean the outside party area together. Kasumi looks up at the starts and talks to herself about how fortunet she is to have met Hajime and when he approaches her she asks if, just for a moment, he'll let her think of him as her hero as she cries on his chest in relief she still has her pendent. It's not a long scene, but it is incredibly touching.
the next subsection is a party at the dorm, no not the party we just had a different one, this time a sleepover. Theirs a scene with Hajime's teacher who I have purposely avoided speaking about until this point. Rest assured she has been here the entire time I just don't think she's very important. This is the exception however as Hajime runs off to save her from drunk driving and we get the cross view early. Ayaka stresses over what to wear with Moka, a scene we also get from Moka's perspective, same problem as last time don't worry I won't repeat myself. Yui rolls around in Hajime's bed, which I don't THINK is an innuendo in this case but who knows? Kasumi tries to bribe Aoba into giving up information on her brother and gets conned. Yoshino agonizes some more about being in love and Shiori hits her brother while thinking about getting treated like a 50's wife. Hajime brings the teacher back to the party and she kisses his cheek before being murdered off screen by five jealous women.
After ANOTHER scene in the bath involving talk about all kinds of girl stuff it would be inappropriate for me to reveal here due to its private nature Hajime goes to take a bath of his own and all the girls show up in their swimsuits because OF COURSE we need a swimsuit scene this is a VISUAL NOVEL come on! Their is a lot of unnecessary boobs and then extra scene time. Ayaka is outside and reiterates to Hajime her desire to make his heart flutter. Yui sits on the couch with him and lets him pet her. Yoshino also gets head pats. Shiori comes to visit and nearly kisses p-kun and Kasumi burns her sensitive tongue after an indirect kiss. It's all really cute, good note to end the extra scenes on.
The last section of the common route is the Haloween party and this is the point the narrative has been building toward. Tonight, Hajime chooses one of the girls to ask to the dance and finally gets a girlfriend and it is the least interesting part of the whole novel. It's not TOTALLY worthless, Yui and Kasumi get to be pretty cute but 90% of this section is just the heroines agonizing over who he's going to choose. Theirs a subplot about Yui being too busy to go to the party but its resolved quickly and the whole cast ends up together for a little free time and competition that Kasumi and Yui totally win. Something to note in the cross views is my good boy Yasu reveals he's into traps and shows the entire student council, all one of him, a picture on his phone of one. The scene ends with the first and only choice of the game. Who won your heart?
THE LONG ROAD TO ROMANCE
In the previous part I alluded to the fact I would be discussing the entire rest of the game in part 2 but as you could guess from the fact their is a paragraph left in this post I'm going to have to renege on that. I have no intention of stopping here but I'm going to need to make this a three parter at least, I just bit off more then I can chew. Next week, I'll focus on what happens with each heroine when she gets the chance to interact with P-kun by herself. If you're liking this review so far be sure to let me know as I'm putting a LOT more work into this one and feedback is the only way I can know if it's paying off. If you've read the novel let me know what you think of my summery, naturally I had to leave a lot out but I'm curious to see if you would have included something I overlooked or vise versa. Regardless, I hope you were entertained, stay well!

Greetings Call of Duty: Mobile Community! We are a little more than a week into Season 10 now and with plenty of content already released, like Headquarters mode, Terminal map, the Battle Pass, and several seasonal challenges. Today, we have even more releasing with the Hunt for Makarov event, the return of 10v10 mode, and more seasonal challenges to dive into. However, before we jump into that we wanted to take a sidebar from all of the usual season specific highlights to talk about top plays.
We’ve done two social campaigns labeled #AreYouInCODM and they have been all about finding some of great clips from players participating in our Call of Duty: Mobile World Championships. We released the first player highlights video derived from these efforts back in July and we are back today with a second player highlights video focused around some excellent sniping. Take a look!

World Championships – Regional Playoffs The time is finally almost here for Stage 4 of the COD Mobile: World Championship 2020 to begin! These are the regional playoffs and they are launching in different regions at different dates. Sure, we could list them out again like last week and explain that these are some of the top teams who fought hard to make it this far, but instead we’ll just let this brand-new video do the talking for us 😉.
https://reddit.com/link/ivfcfk/video/0njtpv3s5zn51/player
We’ll be streaming these Regional Playoffs through a variety of different platforms, like YouTube, Twitch.tv, and Trovo. While we amplify and share content on our main global channels, we also have different pages setup for specific regions. Since LATAM and Japan are our first two playoffs, here is where you can find those YouTube channels to catch the upcoming livestreams:
LATAM (Spanish) YouTube: Call of Duty: Mobile Spanish Official - YouTube Brazilian (Portuguese) YouTube: Call of Duty: Mobile Portuguese Official - YouTube Japan YouTube: CoD Mobile Japan - YouTube
All participants for these events should have received information already from our teams about how to participate in this stage of the tournament, but if for some reason you are a participant and haven’t seen anything, please check out our newly updated World Championship website for Stage 4 info.
Hunt for Makarov Event Our first major event for the season is now here – the Hunt for Makarov. This event follows in the wake of S9's Finest Hour event by giving you a map to explore and some straight-forward ways to collect the Explore Points you’ll need to uncover it all and find Makarov.
All you need to do is play any MP or BR matches to acquire explore points and then head back to this featured event to uncover areas and grab new rewards, like the M4 – Feral Stalker blueprint. If you are a Battle Royale enthusiast, there are also hidden pieces of Makarov’s photo to collect there, which will give you a unique reward if you find them all. Get a quick overview of the event below!
https://reddit.com/link/ivfcfk/video/u0zvwvav5zn51/player
You can find some more information on the event along with some tips on how to quickly complete it on our newest Activision blog post. Lastly, please keep dropping us feedback about events like this to help influence the creation of similar events in the future! Enjoy and best of luck hunting down the ever-elusive Makarov.
Seasonal Challenges
We have two more seasonal challenges out now, bringing the total up to five so far released in Season 10. Last week we released Survival Kit, Master Operator, and Run Gun. Those three mostly featured different and uniquely S10 themed weapons, either camos or blueprints, while this new batch has plenty of weapons available but also a new perk – High Alert. Check out the details below.
Point Blank This hefty eight-part seasonal challenge is by far the most challenging of these two, but with that extra challenge comes over a dozen rewards! As per usual we have credits and Battle Pass XP mixed in with specific items, and to acquire them you’ll need to use and get kills with a variety of different weapons including some closer quarters one like the Cordite and Echo. Here are the main rewards:
  • (Uncommon) RPD – Pelt
  • (Uncommon) Cordite – Plated green
  • (Rare) Charm – Tasy Treat
  • (Rare) Sticker – Kick Back
  • (Rare) Cordite – Iridescent
https://preview.redd.it/0xd5jn7fxzn51.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75ecfce85239b39f57aa289c94f7bb61ff305844
Vigilance This four-part seasonal challenge is pretty simple and straight-forward as long as you are up to the challenge of getting some kills in Multiplayer with sniper rifles and a few specific perks equipped. However, to get all of the rewards you’ll have to unlock the new High Alert perk, which is one of the first rewards you unlock, and then also get kills with it equipped. Here are the main rewards:
  • (Uncommon) DL Q33 – Pelt
  • (Uncommon) M21 EBR – Plated Green
  • (Rare) Calling Card – Thermal Marksmen
  • (Common) Perk – High Alert
10v10 Mode This chaotic and action-packed mode is back by popular demand! This relatively new mode, which launched in Season 9, has been in high demand despite it being frequently available through limited time playlists. It has returned until September 27th (UTC) and as a part of a 10v10 Collection Playlist.
Make sure to jump in and utilize it as much as you can to level up weapons in Gunsmith and complete any seasonal challenges that are benefited by constant action, like the new Point Blank challenge.
https://preview.redd.it/ch4txhdw7zn51.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=926079df76059f00e65c1aca2b8bfd03427addee
Lastly, since people frequently ask how to make a mode permanent; as we’ve mentioned before with other modes, like the now permanent Kill Confirmed, if you want this mode to keep coming back frequently, or even potentially be permanent, then play it as much as you can while it is out and keep letting us know your thoughts throughout the community.
Honey Badger Draw Both our devs and the general CODM community have often talked about balancing different themes and styles in Call of Duty. We all often compare military spec gear that is realistic and meant to make you look like an elite soldier, with more some more comical, light-hearted, colorful, and non-typical options. It is something always on our mind with the design of every draw, crate, BP, and seasonal theme, and that balance is clearly important to everyone.
Now with the new Honey Badger Draw, we have a non-typical approach that mixes both military spec with some light-hearted and fun designs. This one is full of uniquely forest themed weaponry, gear, and a character. You can acquire the HBRa3 - Swarm, a weapon just oozing with potential (and bees), a mountaineering themed solider: Golem - Black Forest, the PDW 57 - Beekeeper, Charm - Hive, and much more. Check out the HBRa3- Swarm’s unique kill effect in action:

Feedback

There has been a variety of different discussions that we’ve been following since the launch of Season 10 and while we may just try to quickly chime in on those with replies on social media or community posts, there are a few we’d like to spend some more time discussing this week.
Bug Fixes and Improvements A challenge every developer faces is whether to focus on releasing new content and new features all of time, or to take a step back and do a maintenance update intending to fix bugs, provide balance changes, or things that are far less obvious but improve the long-term health of the game. With COD: Mobile, we’ve always tried to balance both in each update.
However, Season 9 and Gunsmith was one of our largest updates for this game (if not the largest) and that means it was also the most challenging in relation to maintenance. What all of that means is that we do have some updates planned in the near future that are likely to be more of a maintenance update than a content drop. However, we are still always going to be trying to identify, investigate, and fix whatever we can along the way.
In regard to improvements, we do plan to have future updates that will help address some of the feedback about the new BR changes, UI changes from Gunsmith, and a variety of things that should help everything feel a bit cleaner. It may come in this next update or the one after, but we are always reading feedback, planning improvements, and working those improvements into the next update that has space for it. Just keep on reporting bugs, leaving us feedback, and we’ll share back info and any changes or fixes when we can.

Bug Reports

While we are still looking into various issues and those troublesome bugs that cannot be easily identified, reproduced, or reported, there are a few topics and bugs we wanted to discuss this week. Also, we’ve seen a lot of mentions of people downvoting bug reports recently and please do not do that. We absolutely want to see bug report threads.
There can those rare posts that aren’t actually bugs or with no information, but we’d still prefer to see them, respond (if appropriate), sift through them, and at least be aware of the potential issue instead of them getting nuked to the void from downvotes.
Missing Quick-Chat Voices A few weeks ago in a community update we asked players to let us know if they are still seeing issues with characters not having voice overs/voices in the quick chat menus. Many players kindly took the time to report back, thank you all so much for that, and we are happy to say that this is something that is now being worked on. No clear ETA on anything related to this one, but we’ll try to update and give a specific call-out for it once we see it in an upcoming patch or update.
Event Reward Issues A little over a week over we had some events running at the end of Season 9 that had some bugs preventing players from collecting the rewards. These two events were 10 Men Regiment and Survival Skills. We’ve been sending out these rewards to players who did not receive them, via the in-game mailbox, so if you haven’t received yours yet just hang out since they may still be on the way.
However, if you have not received your missing reward by around this same time next week please reach out to us so that we can look into that for you. Thanks for the patience on this one!
Desync and Lag Related Issues These are both generally still hot topics in the community, as evidenced by this recent thread, and while we are still always open to investigating any issues related to either of these, we did want to bring up that these are different issues. What is shown in that thread could be a desync issue, but more likely the player being fired at was lagging out and on the verge of losing connection to the server.
Desync issues are generally tied to you attempting to fire at someone, them moving normally and reacting normally, and none of your shots registering or they are registering late. If someone is stuck in place, not moving, and not responding, then that’s just good old-fashioned lag and most likely on their end. We believe with the most recent update we’ve at least significantly improved desync related issues, but if you are still seeing them just please let us know and report them.
Speaking of which, we’d love to collect some information on that this week. We’ll start a thread in the comments below and sticky it, but if you are still experiencing desync related issues please respond below and let us know the details we are requesting. This should help us see if there are any clear patterns whether it comes to region, networks, devices, or how it is experienced. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to help report this issue!
Support Options Lastly, while we do see and report bugs through community channels, it is generally only large and clearly identified issues while our player support teams can go through all kinds of reports and in a much more detailed way. Please report bugs through these main support channels:
https://preview.redd.it/se1od1j47zn51.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb9fdcb10eeeb7259b5575fa6f718aedb955939e
This week we are back to promoting some creative works in the community! Generally, we are always looking through various areas of the community and whenever we see some excellent art, creations, videos, or anything we’d like to share with the broader community we reach out to see if the creator would be interested in sharing. This time, it is all about weapon designs!
Reddit user RealChebuRex has been a part of the Call of Duty: Mobile community for a few months now and in that time they have posted a handful of different weapon camos creations or variations. The one that caught our eye first was their GKS Hyperspace:
GKS - Hyperspace by RealChebuRex
Another unique design is their variation of the M4 – Backscratcher that we released back in Season 7: Radioactive Agent. This Electric design just works in all of the right ways.
M4 - Backscratcher Electric by RealChebuRex
While they don’t have any social media accounts with more work, you can always head to RealChebuRex’s Reddit profile to see some of their latest posts and creations. Take a look and thanks to the broad community for always finding ways to foster so many types of creative works.
We have something coming up in the near future that should be perfect for all of you out there who like to create brand-new weapon blueprints (on pre-existing weapons) or camo variations 😉. However, that is it for this community update and thanks to everyone for all of the support. We have so much so much more coming in October and we cannot wait to share more about it.

Description: Up for raffle is a BNIB hard to find Seiko Prospex, reference numbrer SPB079. The Seiko Prospex SPB079 is one of two very similar new references (the other being the SPB077) that are loosely based on the reference 6159, a vintage Seiko diver from the late 1960s. These two new watches are powered by Seiko’s automatic 6R15 movement, a tried and true caliber that comes with a host of features, including hacking seconds, a date window, and resistance to magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m. The SPB079 features a black dial with contrasting metallic blue bezel, and comes on a rubber strap. The sheen on the blue bezel allows it to present anywhere from a bright blue to a deep midnight blue depending on the light and angle; it's great for practical legibility, but also pairs well with most colors for casual wear. This vintage-styled, modern dive watch has a large 44mm stainless-steel case with screw-down crown and water resistance to 200 meters.

2020.09.14 05:42 BlancheFromage "Nichiren's meat tusks"

In case you all didn't notice, you're in for some kind of treat today. Some days, I just love the way google translate mangles the Japanese. Like this bit with the "fruit report"...
Anyhow, we're talking about the Onikuge here, Nichiren's "living" tooth with the gum tissue miraculously growing all around it!!
Among these treasures, there is an especially mysterious one, the Onikuge, a tooth of Nichiren Daishonin. He himself pulled a tooth which had become loose, and gave it to his favorite disciple. A tiny bit of flesh that still adhered to the root of the tooth has grown larger for the past 660 years and now, almost the whole surface of the tooth is covered with flesh. Unbelieveably, this is a living tooth.
Since the Onikuge is thus a mysterious and valuable treasure, it is not customarily shown except on special occasions. However, in recent times, it was opened to the view of all worshippers on the 700th anniversary of Nichiren Shoshu, 1952, and at the ceremonies of Odaigawari (ritual ceremony for the installation of the High Priest), held in 1957 and 1960. At the 1960 ceremony, 200,000 worshippers, including medical specialists and physiologists, were permitted to have the honor of seeing it from a distance of 20 inches, and they were deeply impressed with its dignity, for the Onikuge looks alive and shines with a pearly luster.
Dignified tooth!
There is nothing in the world more mysterious than this sacred Onikuge. It tells us without speaking, the dignity of Buddhism and the mystery of life. ...from the Nichirenshoshu Sokagakkai - 1960 Source
Wanna SEE it?
That's from our earlier reporting on the...thing here.
There is nothing more consistent with reason and common sense than a tooth that continues to grow living tissue after having been separated from its original mouth housing for over seven centuries! So much for "Buddhism is reason. Buddhism is common sense."
Apparently, the story goes that when the "gum tissue" grows enough to completely encircle the base of the tooth, that will indicate that the time of kosen-rufu is at hand:
In the course of the conversation the priests told me various details of religious services and activities of the Taisekiji. The ceremony for the accession of a new abbot upon the death of was conducted on November 17,1959,and Nittatsu Shonin (age 58) became the 66th abbot in the direct succession from Nichiren. At this time the tooth of Nichiren with flesh growing on it—said now to have completed the circumference and thus ushered in the time of the dissemination of the doctrine—, and other treasures were shown to the believers. Noah Brannen
That "the time of the dissemination of the doctrine" = "the time of kosen-rufu", and "the circumference" means "has grown all the way around the tooth".
It's a SIGN!
So the inauguration of Nittatsu Hosoi as High Priest of Nichiren Shoshu marked the official acknowledgment that the time of kosen-rufu was at hand! THE TOOTH HAS SPOKEN!
By this time (late 1959), Toda was over a year dead already. He died in April 1958, but his Soka Gakkai had by then already made impressive strides in converting masses of people to Nichiren Shoshu. The concept of "obutsu myogo", or a theocracy headed by Nichiren Shoshu, was already in widespread usage; in fact, when Ikeda formally formed the Komeito ("Clean Government") party, its platform included this concept in its definition and platform, under the premise that this "fusion of Buddhism and politics" would create an ideal governance and benefit all the people.
It is likely that the reason Makiguchi, Toda, Yajima, and the other 18 members of the Soka Kyoiku Gakkai were imprisoned by the Japanese authorities for "lèsé majesté", or "treason", was for statements like THIS:
During discussions held with Society members both collectively and individually, I have often had occasion to discuss His Majesty. At that time I pointed out that His Majesty, too, is an unenlightened being (bonpu) who as Crown Prince attended Gakushūin (Peers’ school) to learn the art of being emperor. Source
Therefore, His Majesty [the Emperor] is not free of error. . . . However, were His Majesty to become a believer in the Supra-eternal Buddha (Kuon-honbutsu), then I think he would naturally acquire wisdom and conduct political affairs without error. - Tsunesaburo Makeguchi, 1st President of the Soka Gakkai Source
That's kinda a bad thing to say - that the Emperor is prone to error during wartime when all the people are expected to throw in together toward the national cause.
We DO know that neither Toda nor Makiguchi was in any way against Japan's war effort - both enthusiastically supported it, in fact. Source
So we're left wondering.
The purist Nichiren Shoshu belief is that, because the Emperor's legitimacy is defined by Shinto, which according to Nichiren Shoshu is an illegitimate religion (because it is not Nichiren-derived), the Emperor is an illegitimate ruler.
Makiguchi was influenced by Tanaka Chigaku, a firey intolerant ultranationalist Nichirenist whom Makiguchi followed for a little while before ending up converting to Nichiren Shoshu because he lost an argument. Tanaka Chigaku's views were extremely exclusionary - he advocated for a Nichiren-based theocracy as the later Soka Gakkai did.
But anyhow, the "Nichiren's meat tusk" had spoken - the planets were aligned, the signs and portents were auspicious, the prophecies were coming true - and so it was clearly time for Nichiren Shoshu, via its lay army member organization, to take over the position of "state religion" of Japan and thus direct the entire country forever. Because that's what Nichiren wanted and what Nichiren predicted.
So now let's go read the rest of that google translation, shall we?? We'll do our best:
At Taiseki-ji Temple, the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu, there was nothing useful to hand down during the times of the founder Nikko, the third ancestor day, the fourth generation Nichido, the fifth generation Nikko, and the sixth generation date and time. However, after the 9th Lord's Day [9th High Priest's appointment], the treasures of Taiseki-ji became more and more lively as the ones that were useful one after another were forged and forged.
One of them is Nichiren's "Onikuge," which Nichiren Shoshu Taiseki-ji calls himself, such as Nichiren's teeth that fell out of Nichiren's mouth during his lifetime and had gums. Needless to say [it is a fake].
At Taiseki-ji Temple, the head temple of Nichiren Shoshu, the "Nichiren's flesh fangs" are preached to believers as follows. At Taiseki-ji, scallops [the growth of tissue on the magic tooth] are also called "gosho-kotsu".
Nichiren Shoshu Taiseki-ji's "Gosei Bone Preaching" officially explains "Nichiren's flesh fangs" before the believers as follows.
"At the time of this alternative ceremony, I opened the teeth of the great saint's raw bones and decided to allow the deeply confident people to worship. Please live in a clean belief and later in the auditorium. Please do not hesitate to visit us. In the olden days, there was a Buddhist sutra in Hanto, where I preached before I was alive, and where I could translate it. It is said that even though he attaches to the Buddha after his death, only his tongue should not be burned, but when he attaches to the sutra after his death, he does not burn his tongue and emits a blue light on the blue lotus flower. It should be said that it is a mystery of Buddhist law, truly in the same direction as Hanchi and Japan. Please keep this in mind and worship with a sword.
prayers This raw bone is used by the great saint when he was about fifty years old, and his teeth were pulled out and served to his superiors on the day. He was given and played, saying, "My Buddhist law is the most victorious and secret Dafa, and Sakyamuni is foretold by the Lotus Sutra, and Masahoya is timely at the end of the law. Therefore, he cannot get the flight such as Kusanda. I was told that it was a distant mystery, and I made it necessary to illuminate the darkness of this law, the darkness of all ages, and there was no doubt that Ichiten Shikai Hiroshi was proclaimed." It is a treasure of my family that tells me that Ichitenhirofu [Onikuge] will be proof of it, and it is a raw bone that shines as a brilliance for 700 years.
At the time of the alternative ceremony of this mountain, all of the ancestral saint's autographed idol, the raw bone, the ash bone, the first Buddha, the amulet, the news, the second ancestor Nikko Shonin and the successive idols, various holy treasures, etc. remain. We will take care of you with the utmost care and will protect you with your own body. Nanmu Myōhō Renkakyo. " (Preaching at the time of the Nichiren Shoshu head temple Taiseki-ji-67 II high priest Date sensible alternative memorial service of 1980 April 6, 2009)
it is downright confusing sentence, but, in short 700 years ago, teeth and to that fell out from the mouth of the Nichiren It is a substitute that the sticking gingiva is alive and growing, and at Nichiren Shoshu Taiseki-ji, it is opened and worshiped in front of worshipers at the time of Nichiren's distant memorial service and the alternative memorial service of the lord once every fifty years. There is.
In the era when Soka Gakkai's second chairman, Josei Toda, was in charge of the "Shakubuku Great Advance" ["Great March of Shakubuku"], Nichiren's "Meat Fang" was introduced by Josei Toda as follows.[:]
"From April 20th, you will be allowed to see the scallops in the mountains [at the Nichiren Shoshu head temple, Taiseki-ji], and this is a strange thing about these scallops. I don't know if you heard it, but I would like to say it again. Nichiren Daishonin-sama [stated, "]I pulled out my teeth when I was alive.["] There was a little meat under the pulled out teeth. However, this meat was 700 years old. In the meantime, it's gradually increasing, and it's just wrapping the teeth [growing around the tooth]. Can you explain this? And it's pulsing, it's sweating, it's alive. [Ewww gross] Is there anything like that? No matter what the Buddhist sect [the other Nichiren sects call bullshit] says that the scallops are overwhelming, there are absolutely no such teeth other than Fuji Oishiji [the Nichiren Shoshu head temple Taiseki-ji]. Also, from Sendai, people who have good luck and see this raw bone. When I return, I would like to tell everyone about the actual situation that I have seen with my own eyes and tell them as the pride of my Nichiren Masamune [Shoshu]. April 1, 1956, Sendai Branch Flag Return Award Ceremony Sendai City Public Hall" ("Lectures by Dr. [Jo]Sei Toda" from the first edition on October 12, 1958) "Meat fangs are the teeth of Nichiren Daishonin .... At one point, the day superior is a Daishonin. When I was on my side, the teeth of the great saint were wobbly, and I took those teeth and presented them to my superiors on the day. He received them with the sleeves of his clothes and was slaughtered. And it had flesh underneath. It was predicted that all this flesh would wrap its teeth when it was scalloped."
"From what I'm seeing, the meat grows thicker year by year. I think this is medically unexplainable .... This meat gradually grows and wraps [around the] its teeth. I'm the first When I worshiped, it was a time of 650 years of mourning. At that time, I had teeth about the tip of the match stick, but most of the other parts were wrapped in the glass. I put it in a treasure tower made of gold, put it in a box again, put it in another box, and put it in a long tooth. I'm not giving it, but ... I'm sure I'm alive. It's really strange. " (From the first edition of" Lectures by Dr. Kiyoshi Toda , "October 12, 1958)
The lord [High Priest] is also surprised at the big boobs, but the fake ones are fake ones. No matter how big the mullet is, the fake one will not be real.
This is the translation!! O.O
I'm NOT embellishing!
This Nichiren's "flesh fang" is not a Nichiren's tooth, but a forgery by someone in posterity. In other words, it is a bright red fake. From April 6th to 7th, 2006, Nichiren changed from 67th Abe Nikken to 68th Hayase Nichinyo with the new lord [High Priest] of Nichiren Shoshu 68th Nichinyo Hayase. It was held at Taiseki-ji Temple of the Shoshu sect, but this "Nichiren's tooth" was also held here, and in the 21st century, a fake thing that someone in the posterity forged was "Nichiren's tooth". A ridiculous show show was held at Taiseki-ji, which he called himself. Source
Wacky, eh??

Part 2: The case for #FlattentheCurve – the significant costs and benefits of elimination and lockdown, including perspective on ‘long-term effects’ alarmism
Preface
In the first post of 'The case for #FlattentheCurve' I dedicated some time to the question of:
“Are we being successful; by what standard?”
This question is a much better question than making arguments from a position of “who’s right and wrong?” (i.e. generally how the Sweden debate is framed). We should be looking to optimise our strategy and using this frame we could still improve our approaches even if we were to believe we are the best in the world.
I also pointed out that we should bring some perspective to the issue of COVID-19 mortality as compared to background mortality. We should recognise that there is an inherent need for public policy to weigh up the “value of a life” and the “quality of life” alongside many other measures of public good – personal freedoms, economic outcomes, education, social cohesion, etc.
Put plainly, a human life cannot be “priceless” otherwise we would attempt to take no risks and counter-productively shorten our own lives (and certainly destroy our happiness and prosperity). If we were to pretend that human lives are priceless and seek to protect them “at all costs” then we would degrade our ability sustain overall public health and good (given limited resources). For example:
The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee rejects 69 per cent of anti-cancer drugs because they are not cost-effective.
https://www.afr.com/policy/health-and-education/we-could-be-saving-lives-for-less-than-6m-each-20200406-p54hie
So, there is obviously a need to consider whether the Australia’s strategy for COVID-19 is balanced. I think everyone will understand this is worthwhile thing to assess. Unfortunately, it is largely ignored in the daily cycle of cases and deaths. Even worse, the topic can become a point scoring exercise over narrow data-points.
So, this post is intended to extend the discussion from fundamentals of the “skeptical position” (Part 1) to a view of whether the cost and benefit trade-off from our approach to SARS-CoV-2 / COVID-19 makes sense. As I asserted in Part 1:
“COVID-19 currently holds a very special place in [our willingness to pay to reduce the risk of death]. Governments, at least in Australasia, have had a sudden and massively increased willingness to incur unprecedented costs (not just financial expense) to reduce the risk of death. The appetite to do “whatever it takes” is not being applied simply to those who are truly at risk, but also to prevent any transmission to those who are not at much risk at all.”
I am attempting to put that assertion to the test here in the best way that I can. I would very much welcome any constructive critique, discussion, or recommendations to improve the analysis. I have tried to layout the basis and data as simply as possible.
… Everyone right to go?
Framing the discussion
Per Part 1, there is a need to outline some key points to frame the discussion.
First, the IFR of COVID-19 is undergoing continual revision and is variously estimated by different authorities and studies, e.g. ~0.6% (WHO), and ~0.4% in the above study. The IFR is also likely to be variable by region and demographics. For example, a recently study puts the IFR at 0.3% for Icelanders:
Of the 1797 persons who had recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, 1107 of the 1215 who were tested (91.1%) were seropositive; antiviral antibody titers assayed by two pan-Ig assays increased during 2 months after diagnosis by qPCR and remained on a plateau for the remainder of the study. Of quarantined persons, 2.3% were seropositive; of those with unknown exposure, 0.3% were positive. We estimate that 0.9% of Icelanders were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and that the infection was fatal in 0.3%.
https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMoa2026116
The point of this is not to say that COVID-19 is not deadly. That would be ignoring the mortality that has already happened. However, we do need to recognise that the originally feared IFR (2.5%+) has not eventuated, and accordingly we should factor this into our weighing our response moving forward. We should also consider whether that fear drove us to take actions which were disproportionately costly to the threat posed.
Second, is that the mortality risks of COVID-19 within the general population are well established. The risk stratifies to the elderly and those with comorbidities.
The estimated IFR is close to zero for children and younger adults but rises exponentially with age, reaching 0.4% at age 55, 1.3% at age 65, 4.5% at age 75, and 15% at age 85. We find that differences in the age structure of the population and the age-specific prevalence of COVID-19 explain 90% of the geographical variation in population IFR. Consequently, protecting vulnerable age groups could substantially reduce the incidence of mortality
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.07.23.20160895v4.full.pdf
This knowledge should influence the way we view the mortality impact of COVID-19 as compared to our expectations of mortality in normal settings. We know that as you get older your mortality increases and your life expectancy decreases. Utility and quality of life also tends to degrade, although the experience is different from individual to individual, so is difficult to weigh. We do know that as you enter aged-care facilities or palliative care you are probably nearing the end of your life (an unfortunate reality).
Thirdly, we are going to need to find a way to quantify “the benefits and costs” of our strategy. This means that we need to attribute some value to a “life year” for the analysis. From my research, Australia does not have a set standard for the value of a life year (or I couldn’t find it). So I have referred to the number used by Professor Tony Blakely and Professor Nick Wilson in their March 2020 analysis:
How much do we spend to try to reap this expected gain? Based on rules of thumb in the health sector (e.g. decisions on which medicines to approve and fund) – about $A100,000 per life year.
https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/the-maths-and-ethics-of-minimising-covid-19-deaths
Another good baseline is to look at our overall healthcare expenditure. According to this source:
In 2017–18, an estimated $185.4 billion was spent on health goods and services in Australia. This equates to an average of approximately $7,485 per person https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/health-welfare-expenditure/health-expenditure-australia-2017-18/contents/summary
It is worth noting that includes personal, private insurance and non-government spending; with Federal and State combined spending at ~127 billion. Apparently, our spending is 7th highest in the OECD, so we can probably safely say that Australia’s appetite for spending to achieve better health outcomes is quite high.
Perspective on ‘long-term effects’ alarmism
One of the persistent points of concern is that of the potential “long-term” or chronic illnesses which could result from COVID-19. I expect it would be raised in reply to this post. You could make comparisons between this and the initial fears for the IFR; in the absence of good data (and responsible reporting) people will assume the worst possible or most extreme outcome is going to eventuate.
This video by a UK Cardiologist, shared by u/frawks24, does a really good job of putting quite a bit of the alarmism into perspective.
But, how to approach it in this analysis?
It is quite difficult because there simply is not a great deal of data or meta-analysis for ‘chronic illness or morbidity’ as being a widespread issue following COVID-19 recovery. Studies have commenced but they a long way from being completed. Some initial studies have been conducted but they demonstrate narrow effects or have even been debunked / retracted.
There are plenty of anecdotes, alarmist articles and social media posts, but nothing all that substantive so far in terms of systemic studies. Apparent illnesses following COVID-19 range from headaches and lethargy, all the way through the horrible burning pains for months on end. People are claiming all kinds of things, making comparisons to HIV, and generally conflating so called “mounting evidence” with actual evidence.
Governments which have seen widespread community transmission and recoveries are not (yet) raising the alarm over a sudden increase in other chronic illnesses popping up across their populations. Of note:
  • There has been something like ~28m confirmed infections of COVID-19 worldwide. A magnitude more cases will have gone undetected and will have been largely asymptomatic or had mild symptoms. The estimates for this range significantly (10 times seems to be suggested as a rule of thumb, but some estimates are much higher) and there is some good background on this topic here: https://ourworldindata.org/covid-models.
  • Some people are saying they have non-chronic but noticeable symptoms which linger for a period post recovery, although it is difficult to get an actual proportion of these against confirmed cases.
  • Still fewer people than this are claiming / attributing more serious chronic illnesses or conditions. The instances of these seem to be largely anecdotal and very rare as far as I can tell.
Anyway, the point of raising it is that I am not going to simply dismiss ‘long-term effects’ in my analysis. Instead, I am going to make an explicit assumption that there are some long-term effects for some proportion of the population. However, I am not going to assume it is delayed ebola virus where your organs melt after 12 months’ time. That does not seem reasonable.
More to come on this later.
Establishing a range of ‘years of life’ saved
We need to start with a baseline of the years of life we expect we will have saved by pursuing the path we have.
In the first post I provided the example of Japan, which did not implement any general lockdown, has much greater community transmission, and an older population - yet has roughly one-third the death rate per million that we do in Australia. It achieved this specifically by protecting aged-care facilities and the vulnerable. Yet, we are told there is “only one option” for Australia…Anyway, that was the last post.
For the purpose of this analysis I am going to look at a range of potential mortality outcomes under alternative settings. This does not require any fancy or difficult calculations, because we can simply look at deaths per million from overseas.
Confirmed deaths per million - Sep'10 2020 Source: Our World in Data: https://ourworldindata.org/graphetotal-covid-cases-deaths-per-million?tab=table&year=latest&time=2019-12-31..2020-09-10
Imgur: https://imgur.com/Xc3zKf8
San Marino and Andorra are very small countries, so we will remove them from our analysis, and take the average of the remaining countries, as well as the world average, which gives:

https://preview.redd.it/ab6u9orrewm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=3d65952290ec80efa40204817a4fc41902d2d955
Imgur: https://imgur.com/bMSOwUz
Australia’s current population is ~25.5m. So, a proxy for lives saved to-date would be between 2,200 and 16,200 lives (just by scaling to the top and average death rates above). This estimate is actually a little bit higher than Federal CHO Brendan Murphy’s estimate of 14,000 avoided deaths.
Now, let us calculate the expected age-stratification of those deaths. I will apply the Australian mortality data, and to cross-check I have also selected Italy given that we have much lower transmission.
This provides the following results:
https://preview.redd.it/pfhcoqczewm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e02f4165a464f0881d3978aac4286d54320c50e
Imgur: https://imgur.com/ZORFpDp
What we see here is that applying Italy’s mortality seems to output a greater burden on the young. So, if we use Italy as the assumption then our ‘life years” saved will be greater (i.e. we assume we are saving more life years). We can reference the Australian Life Tables as a guide to calculating an expected “numbers of years lost” for each age group, as follows:
https://preview.redd.it/6oyruzs2fwm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e937da44f1a2f5c9e0598e6b644a4d0cb0ed155
Imgur: https://imgur.com/cRzjoar
So that gives us a range of ‘gross life years saved’ between ~27,000 and ~203,000 to-date, prior to any adjustments we need to make.
Excess mortality and adjusting for real-world observations
You will hopefully note that there are two material adjustments which are required:
  1. The substantive proportion of deaths are in aged care (70%; 588 Australia-wide; 557 in Victoria), in which individuals tend to have a much lower life expectancy than the general population. Adjusting for this will bring down ‘life years saved’ as average life expectancy in aged care is 2 to 3 years. If we are conservative (again) and say that 40% of the overall deaths (from ages 70+) would have been aged-care related, then that would bring the overall ‘years of life saved’ to a ‘high-end’ of 160,421.
  2. COVID-19 mortality substantially impacts individuals with comorbidities. These are also individuals which will have a lower life expectancy than the average. However, this would be complex to calculate because we would need establish specific comorbidities impacted for Australia, and the relative life expectancy with those. So, we will exclude any adjustment for this.
By this stage we can see we have built a conservative view of life years saved by assuming more deaths and only adjusting the aged-care factor, not comorbidities. There is a further consideration that we could make, which is whether any of the ‘lives saved’ in our projection would part of background mortality or excess mortality.
Put another way, given that ~160,000 Australian’s die per annum would the ~16,200 lives saved (high-end) in this analysis be entirely in excess to that (i.e. they would not have died except for COVID-19)? Probably not. However, in the interests of keeping this simple (and conservative) I will assume that these are entirely excess deaths.
I will use the figure provided by Professor Blakely of $100,000 AUD per life year; if it is good enough for him, it is good enough for me.
This equates to ~$16bn. A pretty large number. No wonder elimination and lockdowns seemed like a great idea in March… even more so when doomsday mortality figures were being thrown around. Let us move on to the next section.
Mounting costs of massive government intervention
I’ll start this section by saying that it is obvious Victoria is creating all kinds of issues, not just for the people of Victoria who are enduring the longest and strictest lockdown in a western democracy, but for the national strategy.
Stepping back. In March, the Grattan Institute said ‘shutdown’ for 8 to 12 weeks (Endgame C) and wait for a vaccine if it was coming shortly. Unless of course the 8 to 12 week shutdown was not successful, in which case we should #FlattentheCurve (Endgame A). There are a few things they did not account for:
  • Each state taking divergent paths.
  • Victoria being the only state to fail in its control of the virus.
  • Other states slamming their borders shut until zero is achieved.
Hence, as a nation we are essentially ‘locked in’ to ‘locking down’ Victorians, otherwise the country cannot re-open. Either that or Victoria will be isolated (unless there were some partnership with NSW). This ‘critical flaw’ was always inherent in the elimination strategy because once started there was no way to force the states to work together in changing circumstances (and they have not).
Recalling a quote from Part 1:
“Not surprisingly, willingness to pay to reduce the risk of death varies significantly with the type of death.”
It bears repeating that COVID-19 seems to hold a special place on our willingness to do “whatever it takes”. So, we should reflect for a moment on whether the costs we are incurring to eliminate COVID-19 makes sense when compared to normal settings.
Let's look at the fiscal costs which have been incurred to-date. From a federal perspective, the Parliamentary Budget Office provides a good summary of the fiscal impact - noting that this is pre-extension of lockdown in Victoria.
“The analysis shows that the impact of COVID-19 may result in Commonwealth Government net debt in 2029–30 being between 14 and 24 per cent of GDP (up to $800 billion) higher than it would have been otherwise, as shown in the chart”
And…
“Any new spending measures, unless offset by other savings, would result in a further deterioration in the fiscal aggregates in these scenarios.”
In fact, the fiscal forecast has continued to deteriorate month-on-month since April, and is likely to continue to do so as the lockdown in Victoria is ongoing, international borders remain closed, and hard borders across the country prevent the recovery of key industries and economic drivers (tourism, migration, hospitality, etc.). State debts are also ballooning with Victoria’s predicament looking particularly dire right now. Given the $116bn hit is estimated for inner Melbourne alone, we can be pretty certain that the overall economic situation is looking pretty bad.
Scott Morrison’s ‘hibernate the economy’ concept which he touted at the outset of pandemic was a complete fallacy. I believe it was misleading. It is increasingly looking like the cost of COVID-19, including the drive to achieve elimination, could be well north of 1 trillion AUD when you combine lost GDP, as well as ballooning federal and state government debts.
Of course, we could not attribute all of this to our strategic choice of elimination. A recent paper by a New Zealand economist Dr Martin Lally, who analyses the cost/benefit of the New Zealand approach, makes the following point:
“Some of these GDP losses would have arisen without any government-imposed restrictions, because some people would have reduced their interactions with others anyway; for example, a foreigner electing not to make a trip to New Zealand that they would otherwise have made. Further losses would have arisen due to the additional actions of foreign governments; for example, foreign governments preventing their citizens from making foreign trips. Further losses would have arisen if the New Zealand government had followed merely a mitigation strategy. Further losses would have arisen from the New Zealand government instead following a suppression strategy. It is only the last of these losses that can be attributed to the New Zealand government choosing to lockdown rather than mitigate.”
Dr Lally suggests 25% of New Zealand’s overall projected GDP impact as attributable to lockdown, and that is also prior to their second lockdown in Auckland.
It is right to claim that we would have seen significant impacts from COVID-19 even without lockdowns and hard borders in Australia. However, it is relatively indisputable that the forced closure businesses and industries by the government, and repeated lockdowns, is going to incur a very heavy cost on its own as well.
Even if we only assume that only 10% of the potential GDP impact of $800bn (ignoring state debts etc.) is due to lockdowns, hard borders, and other restrictions then we are looking at an $80bn cost. If we used 25% (Dr Lally’s number), we would have a range between $80bn to $200bn.
Using the 'lower-end' 80bn, this equates to ~$500K to ‘per life year saved’ under our high-end projection - which is 5 times higher than Professor Blakely’s value for a life year. At the low-end projection of life years saved it would be nearly $3m per life year. Given the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee generally approve drugs and medicines which cost less than $50K per quality adjusted life year, we know that we’re in pretty rich territory in terms of our intervention costs so far.
Another way to put it in perspective is that the cost ‘per life’ (rather than life year) would be ~$5m. For this kind cost to make sense under normal settings, then every single death / life saved (in our high projection), of the ~16,000, would need to be a relatively young adult with 40 years of life ahead of them. We know that is not the case from the IFR data.
So, at this point we have some reasonable assumptions for what we could call our “core” benefits and costs. However, there are two ‘quality of life’ assumptions we should be attributing some values to and the magnitude of these numbers could swing things substantially:
  1. Benefits from avoiding long-term effects
  2. Temporary ‘people and society’ costs as a result of lockdowns
Onwards! If you're still with me...
Assuming some numbers for ‘long-term effects’
Earlier I provided some perspective on ‘long-term effects’; recognising that we should factor in some cost because we don’t yet know the extent of this (maybe it's real, maybe it's not). A calculation for long-term effects could also be a reasonable proxy for the often stated “fear of contagion” negative impacts if we had community transmission occurring.
So, for the purposes of this analysis let us use the following assumptions:
  • A portion of COVID-19 recoveries would either have lingering symptoms which temporarily reduce their quality of life (say for 6 months).
  • A small proportion will incur some sort of chronic illness for the rest of their lives. We will also assume that the likelihood of these occurring follows the age-stratification as COVID-19 mortality, which intuitively makes sense given risk of illness and chronic illness increases as you age.
So I am going to base the analysis on the following parameters, and these produce some pretty substantive numbers:
  • 60% of the Australian population are infected before we achieve a natural level of herd immunity and the pandemic subsides; ~15.2m people
  • 10% have ‘lingering symptoms’ temporarily reducing their quality of life; ~1.5m people. We will quantify their illness by saying that their quality of life is reduced by 20% before they fully recover over a period of six months. These are reasonably bad symptoms for a lot of people.
  • 0.5% suffers a chronic illness as a result; ~75,000 people. They will lose a 25% of their remaining life expectancy. That’s a fairly substantial impact.
This is what the ‘years of life’ looks like for those assumptions:
https://preview.redd.it/96b71qusfwm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=52693cbcc71b4cecdf977f7ab14da964fcdbe34f
Imgur: https://imgur.com/Vbbk0hf
These are some staggering figures given that they are actually greater than ‘years of life saved’ we calculated earlier. Still, that is what people seem to be fearing so we will keep them for our purposes. The ‘benefits’ accrued by avoiding this, again using the $100,000 AUD figure, would be ~$39bn AUD.
This is a significant number and even if it is only a general assumption it is quite revealing of something else. The hyper-focus on deaths and preventing deaths (by government and media), with little value attributed to other aspects of life, misses what is a much larger part of the overall equation....
... which takes us to the next section.
Costs on people and society
Aside from GDP, there are other costs to our lives as a result of our strategy. Many of the things which are typically of value and importance to us have been temporarily taken away – such as the ability to see family who are interstate, travel, and larger social events. We know that people are being prevented or restricted from participating in some of the important milestones of their lives, such as funerals, weddings, birthdays, births, etc. These are all "worth something". As is the ability to exercise your own agency, work and just generally determine your own day.
I do not want to labour the point or make this too complex, so for the purposes of this analysis let us say that for every state, except Victoria, the balance is OK on a temporary basis (until the vaccine). The restrictions on life in these states are generally reasonable (unless you are unlucky), and as such the overall quality of life in 2020 is pretty much as it was in 2019.
Victoria is another story entirely. Some will have been devastated, some will be hanging in there, and others will be doing OK for now and just want it to be over. Every single one has had their lives impacted in some way though. For all intent and purposes, this is not a dissimilar calculation to the concept of ‘lingering effects’ in that Victorians have had some faculty they valued taken away temporarily. Even if you support the measures and you're a Victorian, there will have been some personal cost to you (unless you already lived inside 23 hours a day and never ventured outside your suburb).
Intuitively (and it has been reported as such), the costs of these measures will more greatly affect the younger age groups, who are more social and physically active. It still is not without cost to the elderly who are no doubt more isolated than ever before. So, if we assume that overall quality of life for Victorians over the last 6 months (or until 24 October) has only been reduced by a maximum of 10% in any age group (5% for the elderly) then we get something like the below.

https://preview.redd.it/xg7kmfb3gwm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=97a28e70e5f6cfd6bb3dbf0c0656e8628f0fcdae
Imgur: https://imgur.com/ArPCgIW
Converting to monetary terms, in the same way as above, this equates to ~$25.4bn.
It’s not near the level of ‘long-term effects’ that we calculated above, but it is not insignificant (and it is probably underestimated given the severity of actual restrictions in Victoria).
This also does not include any of the costs associated with chronic illness or deaths which might be exacerbated by the lockdowns. For example, we know that Victoria has some inordinate number of elective surgeries that have been delayed. I am not going to try and calculate those here, but they are no doubt significant as well. If you do not believe that the above ‘quality of life’ figure is reasonable, then you might choose to use it as a proxy for exacerbated illnesses… or calculate your own.
Playing (or is it praying?) for a vaccine
So, we know the vaccine is close right? We bloody well hope it is given the state of things.
Let us assume we get it before end-March 2021 and it is 100% effective, which means that we have saved every life year we would have otherwise lost in the above analysis. Victoria comes out of lockdown on time and the nation re-opens by Christmas. We do not end up spending any more money intervening through lockdown measures by that point (it's all baked in).
Under this kind of described scenario, I should increase the ‘life years saved’ because presumably we will "save more lives" over the subsequent six months. In fact, in the interests of remaining conservative, I will double that benefit and only use the low-end fiscal costs.
What does the summary look like then?
https://preview.redd.it/gkmd4yu9gwm51.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=87f01a97a5f9c030a93340f99b7735205e0e5297
Imgur: https://imgur.com/4ZtxHfe
It looks like we are well and truly underwater in terms of strategy; by some ~$30bn. Even if you make no allowance for the temporary ‘quality of life costs’ of lockdown in Victoria, but assume you will have avoided long-term effects, the equation still appears to be negative for our strategy.
How would we reconcile this given we were told this is the best way? Or the "only way" if you're in Victoria.
The elimination and lockdown strategy may have made sense at 8 to 12 weeks, but it's downside risks and costs were vastly underestimated. In the panic of March 2020, an “at all costs” approach probably made sense. If the mortality rate from COVID-19 was 2.5%, then it would have been justified. However, the mortality rate is simple is not that high in observation. Further to this, if the vaccine does not prove to be fully effective at preventing community transmission and mortality from COVID-19, then our claimed benefits can only get worse.
In fact, if you support elimination and lockdown at this point, a useful question worth asking is:
  • How many lives do we have to save for the elimination and lockdown strategy to be successful?
  • If the vaccine isn't fully effective, is a 90% reduction in comparative mortality good enough? How about a 50% reduction?
  • Do we need to guarantee zero excess deaths from COVID-19 before we re-open?
Before I close out, how might I interpret my own analysis in a way that is a counterfactual to support the ‘elimination and lockdown’ argument?
  • Victoria’s bungling has cost the whole nation dearly (and Victorians obviously)
  • If not for Victoria, we would have been shutdown for only 8 to 12 weeks nationally.
  • If not for Victoria, then the national borders would be open and the impact to the nation would be far less than it will end up being. We would in fact be recovering very quickly.
  • Therefore 'staying the course' makes sense for the majority of Australians based on the current settings they are experiencing (but perhaps not when all the costs are counted at 'the end').
Closing comment
If you have managed to get through this ~5000 word analysis / argument, then I say to you “congratulations, but what are you doing with your life?”… :)
Really though, you may vehemently disagree on the assertions, calculations, or assumptions used here. You may agree in parts, but think some of these are underestimated or overestimated. Ultimately, this is to prompt discussion and I will correct any mistakes I've made or even happy to make reasoned adjustments.
Any feedback or genuine discussion is much appreciated.

Keeping Up with New Announcements

19. How can I keep up with figure news (announcements, updates, etc.)?
Most people use a MFC combined with any or all of the following news sites:
To use MFC for this I’ll quote question #9.

2020.09.05 02:49 lawblondie95 Trying to Learn Japanese and don’t know where to start

I have been dating my boyfriend (born and raised in Japan) for awhile now. His first language is Japanese and I have been wanting to learn. He has offered to help but with both our careers and schooling being so time consuming it never pans out. I have changed course and was hoping to learn and surprise him. Eventually I want to become understanding of it enough to speak with him conversationally but know that will take many years and think this goal may be what is overwhelming me so much. Additionally, I know he wants me to meet his relatives that still live in Japan when this COVID stuff is sorted and I thought it would be nice to even say a couple things to them in their language! Any tips, classes, etc would be so helpful! I just don’t know where to start.
